Another 'Me Too' here. Win7 Pro & Win7 Home Premium - both are 'crippled' if NSM is active. Fine on my own account - but my son effectively cannot use the web at all.
So... Norton... any news on a fix....?

It doesn’t look like Norton is any hurry to fix this issue. So long term it might behoove users to seek out an alternative product to use. Although I am not a paid user of the safety minder product, I do have many other paid subscriptions to Norton products, who's viability may in my mind at least be in question. I may for the first time in many years be looking for a different solution for my needs.
At any rate there is a better short term solution to the issue then uninstalling or turning off the entire profile. If you login to the Safety Minder control panel (this needs to be done for each monitored account) go to setting, select the monitored account profile by clicking on the profile icon at the top. On the left hand side select the Web setting, I believe it is the second one down. Set the monitoring selection to off.
There is a down side to this especially if you do not have Norton antivirus, Norton internet security or some other very good protection on your computer. It leaves the system open to all kinds of nasty things. If you have good virus protection, you should be ok that way, a good malware program should also be installed. The unfortunate fact is that it will leave the internet fully open to that users whims and wishes, porn , hate all kinds of things, things most of us used the add in for in the first place.
But turning the Web monitoring to off will allow the account to use the internet again. Do this at your own risk, and trust in those that you set up to monitor in the first place.
It appears that all the other monitoring functions of the application are working, only the Web monitoring is messed up. Again, if you do this, be advised, you are putting the younger users at considerable risk, even if the searches and websites they visit are unintentionally nasty in nature, they will see it.
Has anyone successfully asked for a refund for the subscription fee?
So glad I found this, I thought I was going crazy with the pages not displaying or giving "Server busy" messages. Checked the network card, router, gateway, then realized my work laptop (corporate Endpoint Protection and no Safety Minder) worked perfectly on the same network. As soon as I disabled Safety Minder on the other computers, the pages loaded instantly. Extremely aggravating and hurting my kid's homeschooling. Everything is Windows 7, mostly 64-bit but one with 32-bit system. All have latest NIS and latest Safety Minder. Nothing else changed in past few days other than Windows updates.
I have not yet pursued the refund, but tomorrow I'm likely to do so and investigate using another product. I'm not using the free service, I have a paid subscription for a reason. I don't tend to like payng for things that don't work of course.
Could we please have an update? I pay a subscription for this product; would love to get some follow up and have it work. At this point my daughter's laptop is useless unless I disable or uninstall Norton Family which flies in the face of paying for a subscription.
My case numer is [Removed].
BByron, we have the same problem like you had described. If we login to Norton Family Online and disable or stop monitoring the accounts, then all computers with Norton Safety Minder can access the Internet really fast. But as soon as we go back to Norton Family Online and change the accounts to be monitored, then the computer won't be able to access the Internet at all.
Two days ago, I purchased McAfee Safe Eyes and installed it on all PC's at home to protect the kids. I had to do that because I don't think Symantec would fix this problem anytime, soon. I have been using Norton's product for years, really like it, but not sure why the folks at Symantec didn't detect this issue even when quite a few users have been reporting this issue online.
I'd suggest using Norton DNS until a solution is found. I use both Norton DNS and Norton Online Family. Norton DNS helps protect devices that NOS can't for such things as malware, pornography, and non-family friendly sites. There are 3 levels of protection and it's free. It's not NOS but it's better than raw internet.
Same issues here... Symantec, please fix!!!!
Just thought I’d push this thread along a little it was started 09-27-2012 09:28AM by caa100
KatieQ (Symantec Employee) posted the first time 09-27-2012 12:48 PM the second time 09-27-2012 02:04 PM same day saying "Our team is checking into the issue now."
Her third and last post about the issue was 09-28-2012 07:14 PM saying "We are currently working on the issue. I'll post an update in the thread as soon as I get any news about this."
Here it is 10-02-2012 and the problem still exists. I don’t think they are too concerned about fixing it. Someone mentioned that they won’t do anything about it until a site like cnet gets hold of the information on the issue. But from what I see of Cnet that could take weeks if not months to happen. My suggestion is to use your Facebook and Twitter accounts to get the word out. How many people are dealing with this, who may not be tech savvy and are paying big money for computer repairs they don’t need, all because of the problem with Norton Safety Minder. Post to Facebook and Twitter about the problem, and not just to Norton supported pages, post to your own pages and make sure the post are public. People need to know about this. There are a lot of threads in the forum that deal with this issue ,not just this one, there are many if you broaden your search in the Norton community forum, hundreds if not thousands of people with the same problem. Tell the world and maybe we can get some resolution.
One last note, this thread is getting lots of views, If we could get the first poster caa100 to edit his post and point peoples attention to the "me Too" button at the bottom of his post, and get the counter going up, maybe that will help. So far after the almost 1000 views only 10 have clicked the button. Its easy to miss, But one has to be logged in to see it, otherwise it just gives the count not the button. So login and press that button.
I use Open DNS on my router. It is a great backup standard filter. You can have customized settings too. I'll check out Norton DNS.
What a pain spending a bunch of time trying to figure out why internet is not working correctly. It is a good thing I tried an unmonitored account before resetting too many things.
Having to turn this off is eased by the fact that I am also using OpenDNS because it helps keep all the other devices in the house out of bad places (just make sure the ip updater is running).
For any new registrants the "me too" button that a previous post mentioned will not show up until you verify your email address.
Yes worked great for several years now. Fix it fix it fix. If it continues I will just move to ESET or some other less abstrusive software. My kids connot even log on to their school home page to do thier homework with Safety Minder turned on. When we turn it off...no problem
Same exact issue here! Was ready to throw in the towel and buy a Mac until I found this thread. Norton - time to step up to the plate and fix this issue!
Same issue here for the last week. Slow or no internet while NSM is running. Come on Symantec, this has been going on too long.
Windows 7 SP2 x64
NIS 19.8.0.14.
Safety minder 2.3.0.26
You can add me for having the same problem with slow connection & once NOF is disabled, the internet flies.
Watch the problem be something simple as rebooting the server that service connects to to see if the site is OK or not to continue to.
Add another disgruntled user parent to the list. I have tried all the same things posted above to no avail. What a waste of time!
I am going to have to uninstall Norton Safety Minder. Otherwise, web browsing is unsuable.
What do other uses find is best alternative application?
While the problem itself is bad enough, it is worse that Norton has not notified its users of the problem. I have wasted a large number of hours trying to fix this on my end.
Dear KatieQ
Why has Norton not informed everyone of this problem? While the problem itself is bad enough, it is worse that Norton has not notified its users of the problem. I have wasted a large number of hours trying to fix this on my end.
How will Norton notify us when the problem is fixed? Can we roll back to an earlier version of safety minder that works?
Thanks
Rich
Just putting it out there that I am having this problem, too! Windows XP and Windows 7 computers.
I have been harrassing my internet service provider for the past month because of INCREDIBLY slow or non-existant service. After lots of headache and trial and error, I discovered that it was NSM causing the problem.
I am super disappointed with Norton/Symantec and hope to hear about a rollback or fix soon! (it should be easy enough to roll back if they use patch releases...but I'm guessing they don't) :-(
At least give us an update!
