Massive Slowdown Last Few Days - Safety Minder Windows 7

Its working ok for me now also (UK). My kids are hugely happy about his.

Wheres Nortons official word on what happened?

I know in IT servers and aplications can fail but it would be nice to know what was wrong.

Norton flicked a switch and hey presto it works.

Root cause analysis?

Another "me too", it's working just fine now.  Norton, I hope that you

a) get root cause of what happened,

b) put steps in place to prevent it again,

but most importantly

c) put steps in place to INFORM your users of issues or potential issues!....email is good...just a courtesy...don't have a problem  AND waste your customers time AND make your customers frustrated!  This will go a LONG WAY to let your customers know NORTON knows what's going on, is addressing it, and you'll find that keeps customers!  Otherwise, the next time something like this happens...I'll be taking my NOF money and shopping elsewhere.  Andy that may mean I stop subscription to Norton 360 too.

Has Norton said they fixed it -- I just uninstalled it due to Extremely slow computers.  If it works across the board now I will resintall it.  Can anyone confirm?

I had some trouble earlier today that seems instead to be related to an update to Norton Internet Security which required a user-initiated restart (without notice of same).   Web still not quite as fast as it used to be so I hope (yeah, right) that Norton is still working on this.

But yes, it is also VERY disappointing that users - especially those that took the time to come to these official forums to alert Norton to the problem - got NOTHING in terms of acknowledgement of the problem, an explanation of what caused it, or even an announcement that something had been fixed.   They seem to just be ignoring it completely, hoping to sweep it under the rug.   That is really LOUSY customer care.

Dear Symantec Customer Support

Like other users on this forum, we are still waiting for an official announcement that the problem has been fixed.  It would instill more confidence if you would also tell us what the problem was and how it was fixed.

Thank you.

Hi,

As reported on the Forums between Friday, September 28th, and Tuesday, October 2nd, some of our Norton Online Family customers experienced slower web browsing. After some research, we found some temporary server-level issues that resulted in this slowdown, which we took immediate steps to correct. We have also increased our server equipment and capabilities, in order to prevent this situation from recurring.  We know that Norton Online Family is an important service for many of our users' families; we apologize to those affected, and appreciate all of your help to troubleshoot the issue.

Thanks,

Katie

Guess what ?   The problem is back with a vengeance.   Horribly slow internet access and I had addressed everything I can on our machines.   There have been no windows updates for over a week.   Java was updated the other day in it's usual fractured fashion (usually have to go to the Java website and do it again, and not just let the auto-update feature handle it for Windows).  But nothing else is different that I know of - NSM is version 2.3.0.27.   When I disable it, the problem dissappears completely.

I see another thread starting on this already.   This is a four-alarm fire at our home and I really need this fixed TODAY not 2 weeks from now.

COME ON NORTON !

YEP another user here with the same problem, I disabled Norton Safety Minder so I can browse the internet but I am sure its a pain in the ARSE for other users.

No updates at all to my system

Same here, so slow unusable - possibly something to do with recent NIS 20.2.0.19 upgrade ?

Users of Norton Safety Minder had this same type of problem with slow Internet reponse times at the end of September 2012.  A similar thing has started happening again.  My kids complained mutiple times and when we turned it off, the internet response time went back to a very fast speed.  I wonder if other have had issues during the past day.  I only say a couple people mention this issue.

Yep, problem is back for us as well.  As before, started off intermittent, and steadily got worse.
At this point, the only way the internet is usable is when NSM is disabled.

If you are having this problem, please post here so that it gets the attention it deserves.

Workarounds:

  • Disable NSM at the PC for up to 12 hours by right clicking on the NSM icon in the Tray and providing your credentials.

To disable for longer than 12 hourss:

  • Via browser, log into yoru account at https://onlinefamily.norton.com
  • Under Manage Activity, click "Child List" if its not already selected
  • Select a child
  • Cick the "Settings" gear on the right
  • The Norton Safety Minder Supervision toggle will appear
  • Slide it to OFF
  • IMPORTANT:  press the Save button with the gear in it.

Repeat for any other kids.

Remember that your kids will NOT be protected at this point.

Have also re-experienced this on both my sons computer this evening.

We had to uninstall for the last time this happened at the end of September, and now exactly the same thing again. Don't know if it's relevant but after using both of mys osnes laptops we were getting the "Norton Safety Minder needs to restart to install an update" message (although it is very much up to date!)

Have uninstalled (again!) and the problem is solved.

This really does need sorting out

I can't believe the frustration is starting again.  I, too, am experiencing slowdowns unless NSM is disabled.  I am going to have to cancel Nortons Internet Security and purchase another security software.

I can't believe this is happening AGAIN; it's only been a couple of weeks since the last time this happened.  I'm getting rid of it too.

Same problem here, again. Disable Norton Safety Minder and it goes away. Second time around with this problem. When is Norton going to fix this problem on a permanent basis?

I had this problem at the end of september, and now AGAIN. I found out today when I tried to log on to e-mail a project. I got around the problem by creating a guest account from the admin. I am a little dissapointed since this used to be the best free filtering software on the internet, but I guess you get what you pay for.

Here we go again!  Kids are lucky I am home to disable the thing.  I may be out of town next time.  May have to just leave NSM turned off, but really don't want to.  Frustrating as this hasn't been an issue before the last couple months.  What's going on and how do we know when it is fixed??

Yep....the problem is back.  Browsing slow/impossible with Norton Safety Minder enabled.  As soon as I disable Safety Minder, browsing is very fast.

Starting last time we had the problem, I set up my router to use the OpenDNS Parental Control DNS servers.

Called FamilyShield, a smart kid could bypass it, but still better than nothing.

Just set your DNS to

208.67.222.123
208.67.220.123

At least a decent back-up for times like this when NSM is unusable.

Hi,

Thanks for reporting this to us.  While we are checking into the issue, please let us know what security product(s) and version you have on your machines.

Thanks,

Katie
