Win 7 - 64. Norton Security Suite 5.2.2.3 and Norton Safety Minder 2.3.0.27
As mentioned earlier, we had the same problem some time ago and simply disabled NSM and internet was working again like it used to. No other changes, upgrades/updates. A simple disable of NSM allowed for the web to be working again but w/out protection for our son.
Now, we have the same issue again. Have disabled NSM (of course) and the web is working again on his PC. Clearly, the issue is at Norton's end since the problem showed up again.
The problem has returned for us yesterday. It was causing extreme slowness when accessing the Internet (or unable to access the Internet at all). As soon as I uninstalled NSM, we were able to access the Internet again.
I have donwloaded K9 Web Protection (free) and installed it in my computer for now.
Here's an article posted by KatieQ on 10/10/2012 about Symantec had found the problem on their servers and had already taken corrective action:
Appears to be working again. What was the cause of this repeat issue? Will it come back again? Norton needs to fix this on a permanent basis. We, the parents, rely on this service. Therefore, this needs a permanent fix.
“Katie”, how can you expect many of us to stick around if we don’t get an honest explanation of what happened, and some tangible assurance from Norton about preventive efforts ??
I had this issue back in Sept/Oct and posted here. It appeared to have been fixed since the beginning of Oct (for me anyway).
Until last night, I upgraded my laptop to the latest version 2.6.0.43. Now I have the same problem again. It is so slow that I could never connect to any webpages due to timing out. I believe the new version is causing the problem. What was changed in the new version? Does the new version connect to a different server to the old and the new server has capacity issue? Interestingly, the laptops that I have not upgraded to the new version still work fine.
Please look into this urgently. I thought the new version was to help you resolve this issue, but it is actually recreating the same problem. Does your technical teams (infrastructure and development) have a clue what is going on and how to fix it.
This is extremely frustrating and time wasting for your customers. You are supposed to be the top company in this field, what is going on?
Seconded - we now have the same problem - Internet is unusable by my child trying to do his homework.
When I try to disable it and enter my username and password I am told "this machine is part of a different norton family account".
I am about to go to the press with this nonsense. I have good links in the Technology press in the UK. Listen up Symantec - your stock price is about to fall...
As people from the other thread reported, if I clicked edit account from the NSM icon, key in my id and password, I got an error saying it belongs to a different account. When I first installed this last night, I got a different error, saying the server was temporarily unavailable. What is going on?
The reason I posted again, is that I have more info to report here. A), this appears to affect Admin account which is not monitored, B) when I first log in, internet normally works, then it stop with time out errors and C) after time out errors started, if I close the browser (I use firefox), I will nto be able to re-open the browser again. I have to reboot my laptop before I can open the browser. I have also tried IE but got the same results. This has happened whole day, hence I believe it is caused by the new version of NSM.
I will copy and post this on the other thread as well.
Please look into to this and let us have an update urgently.
