My computer kept coming up with Norton Security Suite messages saying it was infected with this virus (I get this free through Comcast, like lots of other folks). So, I looked up the available information, called up the support team and they basically had no clue other than to refer me to the 3 year old instructions for removal from an xp operating system, even though I am running win7 now. They told me it is "low risk" so no big deal if I am not able top remove it anyway. Whatever. So, to make a long story short, I followed those instructions, modifying to correspond to win 7, but they didn't work. The NSS software continued to detect the MBR virus for months and to faithfully "completely remove" it up to ~10 times per day! (now that is what I call service).
Recently, I installed the Microsoft Security Essentials software. Doing a quick scan, it immediately identified and removed a Trojan:DOS/Sinowal.M virus. Well, guess what? Ever since then, the Norton software has not detected anything related to mebroot. Case closed.
The moral of the story is: if you happen to have a problem with this particular virus, install and run Microsoft Security Essentials and forget about trying to find a solution through Norton. I can't believe how much time I wasted on this. Get with it guys!
Cheers, -Doug
