This hadn't happened for a couple days, but did this morning. Similar error mesages to before. ccsvchst.exe is using is using 800MB of memory and 1.69GB of virtual memory.
Chris
Curious to see if it really is NIS2009
What happens when you uninstall NIS?
I feel pretty certain it's NIS since ccSvcHst.exe is part of that product and the only Norton product I have installed:
Chris
I assume this is a shipping build and not a beta build ?
Yes. 16.0.0.125. It is still a trial (for 6 more days).
Chris
Hi Chris,
I believe you should have TWO entries for ccSvcHst.exe.
One as System and one as user (Chris).
Do you have two?
Yes, that's true. The list was sorted by VM size, so the other wasn't consuming nearly the same amount of memory.
Chris
Okay,
I'd like to find out a bit more information if that's alright.
Did you have any other security program installed on your computer before NIS 2009?
If it was a previous Norton Product, did you uninstall it first?
Did this just start, or has it been this way since you first installed NIS 2009?
Thanks
I was using ZoneAlarm before. I had just upgraded to version 8, had problems, and uninstalled. When I saw how much faster my PC ran without it, I decided to look around.
I'm 9 days into the NIS trial. I had uninstalled the trial a couple of times because of a conflict it was having with a Cisco VPN driver (now uninstalled). The second time I uninstalled, I also used the Norton Removal Tool.
I did not see this with the first two installs, but I think I installed them each one day and uninstalled the next morning due to the above issue.
The last install looks like it was on the 17th. This has happened on the 19th, 20th and 24th. So far, it's always been overnight, but at very different times. It hasn't happened during the day while I've been using the PC.
I did see one other reference to a memory leak in ccsvchst.exe, but for version 8.
Thanks for your help,
Chris
Could this have been in the middle of a Full System Scan? Norton takes up a heck of a lot of headroom during one of those.
I don't have one scheduled. It's supposed to just be doing idle time scans. Even then, the memory usage is excessive and the runtime errors are still a problem.
Chris
Hey mijcar,
Interesting thought, but Chris's numbers are through the roof.
Just to confirm, I started a Full System scan a few minutes ago and granted it didn't get too far, but ccSvcHst was at 51K for System and 8K for user.
Chris, let us think for a few minutes.
Yes, it sounds like program problems.
The best thing in this instance would probably be full uninstall and reinstall; and I bet the Norton Removal Tool would be useful here (it will remove any other Norton product you have, too; so you might be want to wait if you do have other products onboard).
I think Chris mentioned earlier that he had used the NRT.
Chris, you could try this:
First, open the main Norton Window and click "Run Live Update" to be sure you have the latest definitions and updates. If you are prompted for a restart, please do so.
After Live Update has completed, in the same main Norton WIndow click on "Help & Support". Then select "One Click Support"
A new window will load. When it is done loading, click "Begin Support Session". That will scan your program for issues and attempt to fix any problems that are found.
Let us know how you do.
Well, the first time I ran this, it found three updates (virus defs, antiphishing sites, and heuristics update), downloaded them, but could not install any of them. It then started a support session of its own to report the problem.
I ran it again, and it only found the first two updates and installed them successfully. I ran the one click support and started the support session. It said all scans were normal.
Chris
Hi Chris,
Are your memory numbers for ccSvcHst.exe still high?
Not right now. I've rebooted a couple times since they were that high and the runtime errors happened. I'm at 2.2K mem and 30K VM for the SYSTEM process and 6K mem and 17K VM for the user process. It seems that some action (like a scan) or response (perhaps to a piece email - although AntiSpam is off, I prefer Outlook's) is causing this issue. I looked in the history to see if any event correlated, but didn't see any. I guess I'll see what happens tonight.
Chris
Please keep us posted.
Thanks.
Well, no issues last night. Memory is normal this morning and no runtime errors. I don't know how many nights in a row I have to go before I decide it's not going to happen any more. Hmmm....
