"Message from webpage" pop up after visiting Norton websites

I recently created my Norton account management through my Norton 360 app. I accessed the Online Help drop down from the account page and had a look on the virus information page. Specifically when I clicked on the cybercrime information link I was taken to us.norton.com/cybercrimeindex page and then when I clicked on the back button I then got this message:

 

Are you sure you want to leave this page?

 

Message from webpage:

 

false

 

Then I had two options to choose - Leave this page or Stay on this page.

 

This message doesn't appear everytime I go on this page but it has happened on one other Norton page intermittently as well - us.norton.com

 

Does anyone know what this means - is it a virus or just to do with Internet Explorer settings?

 

I have had three different answers from Microsoft Support - the first guy said it might be a virus and then talked himself round to saying it probably wasn't. The second guy said it definitely was a virus and the third said it could not have been a virus due to it being a Norton webpage.

 

Norton Support line says it's not a virus but no one I have spoken to can tell me exactly what this message means or what is causing it.

 

Has anyone else experienced this or know what it is?

That alert is generated by the website.  Usually a site will give you this prompt if you have entered data onto the page, so that you do not accidentally leave the site and lose everything you have entered (the Norton Forums text editor will give you this warning if you compose a post and then click "Cancel").  While some less scrupulous sites will sometimes use this device simply to try to keep you from leaving, most sites use the warning for legitimate purposes.  The alert itself is not malicious.

I hadn't entered any information on these pages - I literally clicked on them and then clicked the back button. I'm a little suspicious about it because the message doesn't appear everytime I visit the pages and click the back button - the message appears intermittently. And now, in addition to the "are you sure you want to leave this page?" message, a message at the bottom of the screen appears saying a pop up has been blocked. I'm surprised these are coming from Norton sites.

 

Do you still think this is legimate?
