I am running NIS 2013 on Win 8. I have the Microsoft Solitaire Collection App installed. As I often have my machine on for too short a time to run a full scan I have disabled the automatic scan but run a manual Drive Scan of my System drive once a week.
I have noticed that the scan seems to freeze while scanning the Microsoft Solitaire Program folder "C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftSolitaireCollection_1.6.2.30419_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe". The scan dialogue appears to be running normally but doesn't get any further than this partricular folder. The file it is scanning today is C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.MicrosoftSolitaireCollection_1.6.2.30419_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe\Common\Assets\DailyChallenge/FEU3_Image.png, but I cannot confirm that it is the same file that has caused the problem previously.

I start the scan when I am not using the machine for anything else and close any other programmes, including Win 8 apps.
A normal scan takes c. 2 - 2.5 hours to complete a scan of 1.6 M objects.
Yesterday it had been running 3 hours and was scanning the file showin 115 K objects scanned. I left it for a further 2 hours, it had not moved from the file nor had no. of objects scanned changed.
I originally thought the problem may be related to the issues that occurred some months ago with Win 8 but noticed that the same folder was being scanned when the problem occurred this week as last.
After two weeks without the problem occurring, the scan froze again today. I realised that Solitaire was still running. I closed it and the scan continued as normal. The problem seems to be related to the App still running. Again it was a png image file, not the same one as last time, that it got stuck on, unless it was the next file to be scanned that caused the hold up and the progress display had not moved on.
Seems a bit odd but at least I know how to get round the problem.
You may be encountering a reflection of something I've been told about the Windows 8 Appls that you start from the Start Screen -- you do not stop them when you stop using them -- you just go back to the Start Screen and start up something else.
If that is correct then what you describe fits in.
FWIW I think you can stop an App before you leave it by using the classic ALT key + F4 combination -- you might want to try that and see if helps?
