Missing control panel icon

Vista home premium 32bit

I have lost the desktop icon for Windows Control Panel.
I clicked control panel icon and then changed to classic. This always seems to move the icon to a different spot on my desktop. But it is still always there and I can drag it back to where I want it.
But this time it is GONE. : (
I can access it from Start>Settings
And I can access it from
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools

I tried the process of right clicking on empty space of desktop and going to personalize, then click change desktop item and clicking the box for control panel. But that does not seem to work.
I do not think its a virus, because I can access it, just not make a desktop icon

Edit: Duh! You can also right click Control Panel from Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools and select "sent to..." Desktop (create shortcut). I should have mentioned that first, huh? :smileyfrustrated:

Hi killyourtv

No, that's actually the last resort solution because we end up with a Control Panel icon on the Desktop that has a shortcut annotation! The instructions that you provided earlier in your post are correct and work fine under Windows Vista with NIS 2012 and will provide the best looking link to the Control Panel via the Windows Vista desktop.

What I don't understand from Calls' opening post is this:

"I clicked control panel icon and then changed to classic. This always seems to move the icon to a different spot on my desktop. But it is still always there and I can drag it back to where I want it."

Changing the Control Panel View settings should have no bearing on the arrangement of the Desktop icons. Calls, please provide some more details on how to reproduce this behaviour.

Thanks

To elsewhere-
Yes it seems for some reason when I change to classic view it moves the control panel icon to the center of the screen. Don’t know why, but it has always done this. I like it on the left hand side if the screen so I move it back there. I don’t know if it is because we have like 55 desktop items on our screen

To huwynger-
Yes the control panel icon box is checked. When I log on via my admin account I can check and uncheck the box for the control panel icon and it will show/ not show on my desktop accordingly.
But when logged on via the limited user account, it does not respond appropriately.
I’m 100% sure this is not virus driven. As I said I can still easily access the control panel through start menu and via program menu

Calls,

I still have my Control Panel icon on the desktop in my WIndows 7 Home Premium 32 bit and I'm logged in as one of the two users but because of how I use my PC and what I regard as low risks I do operate with Elevated Privileges .

What I did notice when checking out before posting was that the screen no longer indicated Control Panel with an icon but the check box was there.

Huwynger- thanks for the reply.
Not sure i understand what you mean:
You have the control panel desktop icon but

that the screen no longer indicated Control Panel with an icon but the check box was there.

Can you see the inserted image on your iPhone?

Yes, I just checked. On my old phone I could not see images, so I didn’t try looking. But the iPhone, I can. So I see what you mean, the icon doesn’t show there but does on your desktop

Just an update, should anyone else need help in the future with this.
I changed the desktop resolution(?) and the icon appeared back on the screen near the edge. So I think it was always on the desktop, just had been pushed out of view
