Mozilla plans to release Firefox 78.0.1 later today to the public. Firefox users who use automatic updates in the browser may notice that the browser is upgraded from an earlier version straight to Firefox 78.0.1 and not to Firefox 78.0 as expected. The very same is true for Firefox ESR, the version that will be offered via automatic updates will be Firefox ESR 78.0.1. https://www.ghacks.net/2020/07/01/mozilla-pauses-firefox-78-0-rollout-prepares-firefox-78-0-1/
Well they do have new versions every 4 weeks although they are broken.
Jim
And now on 78.0.2 in 10 days
Regarding Firefox ESR, I was offered 68.10.0 rather than 78.0.1 (although I know I can download the the latter if desired). This seems to be consistent with the behavior I recall in the past, where there are "parallel" versions of ESR for about 3 months, allowing enterprise customers to test and prepare for the changes.
I see that you specifically mentioned automatic updates, which I have turned off. Surprised there would be a difference, though.
PhoneMan:Mozilla needs to slow down and test better.
FF 77 lasted 1 day and updated to 77.0.1 and now 78 never made it out before needing a fix in 78.0.1.
But Mozilla is on schedule so who cares if the product is flawed.
COME ON MAN

Thankee kind Sir!
FF 78.0.1 now available from the internal updater.
That is correct Hugh. You should not have to restart your machine just to update Firefox, but Firefox does need to close and re-open.
Mine told me yesterday evening that there was an update but I said "Later"
Got another this morning when first starting FF and said later but when I checked About it said there was an update to 78.0.1 so I never got the intermediary.
BTW I've been meaning for ages to check this: When FFupdates it says I need to Restart to complete the Update -- I've assumed recently that they mean Restart Firefox and not Restart the computer?
Correct?
