I've recently downloaded the latest Firefox browser and started using it as an alternative to IE9, and I've noticed each day that whenever I use it for the first time a Norton alert pops up to announce that updater.exe has been downloaded. The insight declares it to be safe and trusted and originating from Mozilla.
Is this normal? Research into 'updater.exe' produces a range of verdicts from highly suspect to completely benign.
I'd be interested to hear of any opinions out there.

It is normal for Norton to pop up a reputation notice when Firefox downloads a new update. The question is why you are getting this every day. You may have Firefox set to download but not to install updates. In Firefox, click Help > About Firefox > Check for updates. If there is a new version, this will download and install it for you. Before doing this, run Norton LiveUpdate and reboot, just to be sure that you have the latest Norton Toolbar installed first, before updating the browser.
I've just uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it. I didn't get the alert on running it for the first time. I'll keep a close eye on this and post back if anything changes.
I addition to what SendOfJive has said, I would advice you to select the option “Check for updates, but let me choose whether to install them” in Firefox.
