MS Outlook .pst file: view vs. restore?

According to N360 the pst files selected are backed up. I wished to confirm this by seeing the pst files resident under the N360 backup location in file explorer. Herein I believe lies two problems that I've encountered. I first tried doing this shortly after setting up the backup and the following morning my Outlook Tasks, Contacts, Appointments had duplicate listings. I corrected the problem by reverting to an on drive backup but couldn't definitely define the cause. This morning I tried double clicking my way down the N360 backup tree on file explorer, got an error that a backup was in progress, closed explorer and then saw that I had apparently initiated a RESTORE of the pst files which would explain the previous day's duplicates. I cancelled the operation.

So could someone provide a link or quick explanation as to how you simply view the files that are backed up absent triggering a restore (which oddly does not have a confirm to start)?

The second section--browse for files resolves the matter of file date.

1. The first run of the only backup set mistakenly included more files than necessary. I subsequently did a preview, clicked all to exclude all and then unclicked the three (of 15) that were necessary. I thought that that would delete the unwanted 12 files already backed up. It did not. How does one delete certain files of a file set that have been backed up once?

2. On the last screen of the 3 restore panels I chose to change the location of the file restore (until I've satisfied myself of the entire process). I do not understand what is meant by "Copies of the restored file may be backed up if the destination you choose is scanned for backup." What does this have to do with changing the location of the restore? Secondly, created a new directory C:\MyData\N360_Backup_FileRestoreLocation and then clicked on use a different file location, browsed to the aforementioned file path and then received the following error "You cannot restore to a previously backed up folder. Select a different folder." This error makes no sense. This could not have been a previously backed up folder since I just created the folder.

Hi Mark,

1. To delete the files which are already backed up, please follow these steps,

 - Go to Main UI>>Backup pillar >> Manage Backup sets

 - Go to Where tab and select the location where your backed set is available.

 - Click on the 'Delete backed up files...' link available at the bottom of this page. This will list the files that you have backed up already. Chose your required files and delete them.

2. 'Copies of the restored file may be backed up if the destination you choose is scanned for backup."

This is to give a warning to the user who have chosen any particular drive (for example D:\) completely in the backup set and restoring in the same location will again create a copy of the restored file in the backup set that contains this location.

'N360_Backup' is the name of the folder which Norton creates for backing up the files which may be the reason for your error.

Ashwini.

Thanks--appreciate the time getting me straightened out on the format. After years of 'regular' backup software I'm just not used to this format.

Btw, you might want to trap for 'over industrious' folks like myself that click down the file explorer tree for a look at the backed up files and warn before commencing the restore.

I may still have a question or two after completing my setup and my wife's.

Thanks again,

Hi Mark,
Thanks for your suggestion. And you can come to this forum anytime if you have any issues with another pc as well.

Ashwini.

For this condition you may use pst  repair tool. The tool can demonstrate the results of working with problem pst files. Starts under all software configurations due to its various features. It allow to work with big pst files bigger than 2 gb.

I'm wondering what (signifnicantly) additional the pst recovery link has/does versus the already onboard scanpst.exe?
