MS: You can "safely" use Insider Release Preview builds on current RTM installs

Interesting from a Windows Insider Program email just now -- although I'm no longer using the Insider Preview builds:

<<  If you want early access to key updates - but also want less risk to your device than being on the Fast or Slow rings – the new Release Preview ring is your best option.

Just go to Windows Update>Advanced options>Get Insider Preview builds and select Release Preview.  >> [My emphasis here]

Note the RELEASE word in what you select -- Must be getting really close.

I must look and see if that's available on my RTM version of 10 and/or on 8.1 ... and maybe sacrifice one of them!

PhoneMan:

That update KB3170410 can only be downloaded manually and not offered through WU.

It looks like a hot fix for systems that connect to a company server running  System Center Configuration Manager so not needed by normal consumers.

I am sure this hot fix will be included in the next update release along with other fixes.

I'll wait for WU.

Hi, Jim. Had 20 minutes to spare, so downloaded it just for the newer build !

System seems a bit snappier, but that might just be me.  yes

Additional to above. Even though Windows downloads the previous version, the updated version 446 is still retained. yes

Hi, Hugh. I think they ARE very close. I downloaded Build10586.446, which is just released.

Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 (KB3170410). Downloaded via this link

http://www.tenforums.com/windows-10-news/53641-cumulative-update-windows-10-version-1511-kb3170410.html

This KB is not for insiders; it's for users with version 10586.

Working fine, so far !

Edit---- Now Windows Update wants to download the previous build, aka 10586.420 ! Fp1.jpg
