Fix for LiveUpdate failing on "Web Protection Definitions". (8920,200)
HooRay!
I did have to run it twice but then it did download and install 2 Web Protection updates ....
I am still getting Error Messages that W.P.D.s Failed, along with any other Update that has been Downloaded with W.P.D.s. I Ran the Tool Twice and then Ran Norton LiveUpdate and it Failed. I am really getting fed-up of this!
I ran the Tool and the following Updates said were Failed:
- Norton 2009 I.P.S.
- N. 2009 W.P.D.s
- N. 2009 S.V.D.s
- N. 2009 V.D.s
I then clicked "Close" on Norton LiveUpdate. And then I re-ran Norton LiveUpdate and it installed two I.P.S., which has never happened before. Would just like to bring this to symantec's Attention.
I experience this every so often: A Live Update showing a failed update, then immediately having no problem when I run it again ... but this time picking up different updates.
This doesn't bother me. I assume that the initial package contains some udates that I need and some that I don't, so they don't get installed. Then the next update reads the previous updates correctly and their are no more issues.
This only seems to happen after a lot period of the computer being either off or in suspension.
Just got another W.P.D.s Update “Failed to Complete”.
Hello Floating_Red,
This fix is for the instance when Web Protection Definitions are failing because of a common issue that some people are having. It seems your issue is different since its not just the Web Protection Definitions failing. Do you get a different error code?

Hi Tim,
This I.P.S. Failed the very first day I installed N.I.S. 2009 along with W.P.D.s. Other Updates say they "Failed to Complete", say, for example, Streaming Virus Definitions, but the wee timer call "Definition Updates" changes to "Seconds ago".
Will let you know the exact Error Code next time it happens.
When I clicked on the W.P.D.s when it Failed to Complete, I got this Error: Error: “Norton LiveUpdate was unable to install an update” (8920,208). S.V.D.s said "Failed to Complete", but, again, the Definition Updates changed to "Seconds ago".

Just got another Fail.
Find and delete ncodefs.

The find and delete ncodefs isn't needed anymore with the fix that we posted just the other day.
The issue that Floating_Red is having is not the same issue as this one, as this issue has a different error code.
Floating Red,
There is a known issue (to be fixed in the upcoming patch) where failure of one update can, in some cases, cause the UI to incorrectly report other updates as failed even though they succeeded. Based on your description, I would guess that is why you are seeing multiple "failures". There is probably just one type of update which is actually failing.
I will send you a private message on how to upload logs so I can take a look at them.
I am also having a load of problems with NIS 2009 updating, started on my pc and now my laptop does the same thing… the most common error I am getting at the moment is “couldnt connect to server” or it tells me all things are up to date but does not update at all and the definition updates time doesnt change… I like the look of NIS 09 but its proving to be a pain in the rear…
I used the fix and it took 4 or 5 tries to get liveupdate to work without errors. The fix is only temporary, as I got the same error again 6 hours later when it tried to update web protection updates. I had to run the fix again to get live update to work without errors. When are they going to come out with a patch that fixes this problem permanently?
