Hi ekaynick

Did you use SymNRT when uninstalling? Also, what operating system and service pack are you using? This sounds like an issue for online support, have you tried that yet?

Let us know thanks.

Naturally when I click on the link you kindly provided nothing happened.  I am trying to avoid dealing with Symantec since last time for virus help they charged me $99 and were unable to fix the problem.  Had to go to Dell and they were able to eliminate the virus from my computer.  I am using Windows XP service pack 2 (I believe).  Thanks for resonding to my desperate plea for help.

The link symnrt is in fact blank. By Symnrt I think Johna is referring to Symantec Norton removal tool. Please refer to this advisory

note

At this moment I doubt that your problem is actually caused by Norton as such. You may have an infection. In that event Norton may be corrupted or more likely your system is. I suggest you use one of the many scanners to check out your system. If you have Vista you already have defender loaded and can use that but only as a starter. On its own it is insufficient. Next you should goto run and type mrt which will run windows malicious software removal tool. Again it is only a starter. As your Norton is not installed now, I suggest you start with the download from Microsoft of onecare scanner. As see if your system is clean of virus. If you need help in locating these tools, just let us know here in the forum and I will take more time to give you the links.

I appreciate your time devoted to my issue.  It's frustrating because I've had 360 for quite a while with no problems and now it seems like I have a major virus which is what I was trying to avoid when I bought the program.  I would appreciate the links to some safe places to go to have my computer scanned.  I don't have Vista, but XP if that's important info to have.

OK, go to start and run command, and type mrt, it should be August 2008 release if you kept your computer up to date. Advise if anything found.

Goto Onecare and install and run protection scanner. If this shows you are clean, then you can be something like 98% confident that you are. At that point either you should download another scanner like Malwarebytes or assume you are clean and run Norton Removal Tool and then try to reinstall Norton 360 and advise.

So I am in the process of doing the onecare scan and the results show: virus & spyware (8 items detected, 5 issues found); registry cleaner (638 invalid items found); disk clean up (343.8MB temp. files found); disk fragmentation (12% fragmented).  How can all this be possible when I spent all this money on Norton 360 which was working for a year before all problems started?  What’s the point of purchasing Norton 360 if you computer gets messed up anyways?  Sorry, just venting…  I will check the “mrt” thing when the windows onecare is finished.  I think it’s safe to say that my computer is not clean.  I purchased Adware Alert about a year ago (which stopped working as Norton did).  Is that a reputable product?  Once I’m finished with onecare and I redownload Adware Alert should I go ahead and uninstall, then reinstall Norton 360?

Sorry about the blank link in my post above, have just fixed it.  :smileywink:

The link I gave you was only for the Protection scanner and NOT for the other Onecare fixes. I did not intend that you should run or fix registry cleaner, disk cleanup or disk fragmentation. Clearly there are some virus issues. It would be nice and possibly useful to know exactly what Onecare found. If you have not applied the other fixes, I would not. Try to allow Onecare to fix the virus issues. If it cannot then you can download the 30 day trial of Onecare and that then should be able to fix the infections.

Once Onecare protection scanner says you are clean, you can assume you ar 98%. I believe your Norton 360 is not installed at this point as otherwise Onecare would not work.

After Onecare and MRT you can decide if you wish to try a 2nd scanner as Johna has suggested. However, it is likely that each scanner will find something. It is more a question of what each is finding and whether they are serious or not.

Once you are satisfied that your system is clean, you should run the Norton Removal Tool and reinstall Norton 360 v2.

Once installed and updated you should run comprehensive scan.

I understand your other concerns but you will appreciate that without knowing what file infected your system, or even what infections you had, it is impossible to even advise if Norton 360 should have detected same.

Ok.  So I did the mrt thing, one care, and downloaded Tune Up Utilities 2008.  Each found something wrong and supposedly fixed them.  I uninstalled Norton and reinstalled Norton 360 v2.  So far it looks good.  I'm still having a problem with my son's Jump Start Kindergarten World, but that may be a software issue.  I don't suppose any of you computer gurus know anything about that software would you?!  lol

I'd like to think that my problem is solved.  Only time will tell.  Thank you for your attention on my issue.  I found the advice incredibly helpful.
