Must turn off Norton to access Web Site

Hello:  Unfortunately, I have to manually turn off 4 of Norton's features (anti-virus, anti-spy, smart firewall, intrusion prevention) before a search feature on a web site (zipcar.com) will work.  I can open the web site and start the reservation search tool but results are not returned unless I disable Norton .

So far I have tried:

-- activating active X, java, etc using IE

-- added the URL to "safe list" in IE

-- used Norton support Q&A help tool but didn't get helpful workaround.

What steps should so that I can use this web site's search tool without leaving my computer vulnerable?

I have looked at the web site and see nothing that should be giving you this problem on the public side.  Are you a member of zipcar.com ?  When you are using this reservation tool, you are logged in, right?  Do you know if this is a https address?  You may have to add this web address to the firewall rules to get it correct but I have no problem with the site not logging in as a member.

Hi -

Did you add the Domain to IE, under Internet Options - Security - Trusted Sites?

Example - HTTP://*.zipcar.com or HTTPS://*.zipcar.com

Let us know.

Opps, I forgot the basics, Mo.

My system is Windows XP using IE6 and Norton Internet Security 2009.

Hi dbrisendine: Thanks for checking the site and your questions.

-  I am a zipcar member and, after login, can make reservations but only if I disable Norton IS 2009.

- I'm not sure if zipcar is a "https" but I couple of weeks ago I added it to IE's Trusted Site as "https://*zip.car" and https://www.zipcar.com . Sadly no change.

- I went through NIS2009 / Internet / Settings but didn't see a section (+) in which I could add zipcar.com as a "safe" URL"

Where in NIS2009 can I add a URL for the firewall to consider "safe"?

Jasper

Hi Compumind - Thanks for the tip. I did add the URL as a "trusted site" (https://*.zipcar) but that didn't work.  My IE6 won't take just the "http://" (no "s").

Go to (in NIS2009) Internet Settings, Smart Firewall, Advanced Settings, General Rules, Configure +, ADD.  From there you want to Allow, to and from, Only computer and sites listed below, individual and enter www.zipcar.com, click OK, click next, click next, clixk next and name this rule anything you want (maybe ZipCar Rule), then click next and finish.  Click OK to close the settings menus.  Test this and see if it works.  Please let us know here.

Jasper1, can you tell us what NIS is reporting as the problem? Knowing that would help to better identify how to disable the detection for this issue. You should be able to find something occurring around the time of your problem in the Security History; please let us know what it reports.

Thanks dbrisendine! That did the trick.

I use that site a lot and was always nervous about turning off NIS2009, particularly the fire wall.

Cheers,

Jasper

SOLUTION for NIS2009

<snip>

Internet Settings, Smart Firewall, Advanced Settings, General Rules, Configure +, ADD

From there you want to Allow, to and from, Only computer and sites listed below, individual and enter (URL), click OK, click next, click next, click next and name this rule anything you want ..., then click next and finish.  Click OK to close the settings menus.

Hi Reese -- Newbie here; I forgot to include the outcome/error report.

The previous post solved it but other members with a similar problem may want to know that in my case NIS2009 didn't indicate the URL was block.

The destination site (zipcar.com) returned a message "Opps, we cannot zip your results, please try again later."

Not a typical error message but it seems that the destination site, may not provide an error indicating that it isn't functioning due to a firewall issue.

Cheers,

Jasper

Hi,

I have a somewhat similar problem with NIS 2009 on XP in both IE7 and FF3.10:

On one of my own websites, www.heartopeners.com (it's a site hosted on the Ning Network - www.ning.com), some of the internal popups (the kind that displays on top of a dimmed version of the current page) simply do not appear. I cannot make them appear, neither by adding a rule as described in this thread, nor by turning off the NIS 2009 firewall. It worked before installation of NIS 2009. On another computer of mine, without NIS 2009, I still have full access to the site.

I also experienced trouble uploading a file from my computer to a site using a browse function and pressing an "upload" button, I don't know if this was caused by NIS 2009 but suspect this could be the case.

Would very much like some help on this. Have requested support from Norton yesterday but have not heard anything from them.

Jasper,

Glad to here db's fix worked for your problem. I would also recommend upgrading to IE7 or IE8. IE6 is far less secure than either of them and since most websites will soon be redesigned to work with IE8, IE6 will likely be too outdated to browse the internet effectively in just a matter of months.

Jasper, it works for me without turning off anything.

Jasper, Pexley's right on here.  In fact, I was thinking that maybe your problems began with the browser.  I don't recommend IE8.  Of all the computers I have installed it on, I have seen no improvement and a substantial amount of degradation in terms of what the user can do or tieing up of resources.

Below are screendumps from a computer not running NIS 2009. The second of those pictures has the internal popup which seems to be blocked on computers with NIS 2009.
