My Auto-protect wont stay on, says my Norton's has an internal problem

Moved to Norton 360 board for better exposure.

Hello Diane,

We'll need some more information in order to assist you.

Can you tell us which Norton Product and version (or year) you are using, along with your operating system and service pack?

Also, let us know if you have any other security software installed.

Thanks.

The system restore should be the cause for this problem. I think the best thing you can do is to reinstall NIS, but before you reinstall, try to run LiveUpdate and reboot your computer. Run LiveUpdate again and then try to turn on autoprotect. If the problem persists, you should use Norton Removal Tool and then reinstall NIS.

Sorry...I forgot to put that info in. My computer is Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1, Intel Pentium dual processor

My Nortons is 2008, 360  2.0  All-In-One-Security,

I thought I would lose my subscription if I try uninstalling then re-install?

I also have Windows Security System, which is also displaying that my Malware Protection is also turned off..and I cant turn it one either..Windows Defender appears to be Ok...last scan shows that everything is fine.

Sorry for not giving more info

Thanks

You won’t loose your subscription, just keep you product key in a safe place. What is the error number you receive? Could you try to reproduce the error?

You mentioned the computer was really slow.  This may be caused by the Error, or Threats have slipped through.  As well as doing what Vejdin suggested, I would also Recommend that you Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Install, Update and then re-start in to Safe Mode and doing a Full Scan of all Drives.  Please make sure you are Dis-connected from the Internet before Running any Anti-Virus Scan.  Let us know the Results of the Scan!

Thank you sooooooooooo much for all your help. I went to the Norton library, and did all the changes, but still had the problem. So I got the Norton removal tool, and re-installed Nortons. So far ..so good.I clicked on updates...and its been running for about 20 min...and that has me worried.  Now I going to download the malware bytes that was suggested...aand when I do the scan I will come back and give you my results.

You are awesome!  cross your fingers..not sure I am out of the woods yet.

Diane

Ok  I downloaded Malware Bytes and here is the result..hope its ok to post them

Now I still dont know what to do about Nortons not updating.  As for the above results...I have no idea where these all came from

Should I just go buy an newer version of Nortons?

Sorry I

Hello, Diane,

How are you?

It's fine to Post them.

Have you tried to Run a Manual LiveUpdate?  What was the Result, i.e. did it Run and Finish...?

How many Days are Left on Your Subscription?

Hi Floating_Red, Good Morning

I have 161 days left on my subscription.  I still cant update it, I tried both auto and manual updates...they start fine, then it just stays at downloading updates with no conclusion.  Of course the "red" x is back, and the new error message is Virus Definitions.

I am at a total loss as what to do next, other than getting NSI 2009, and perhaps I would have the same problems still ?

Thanks for all your help, just sorry this problem is ongoing

Diane

I forgot to add that at least this time, the auto-protect is on…we got that much out of this lol

Morning, Diane,

Please do another Manual LiveUpdate and leave it for a good 30minutes, then let us know what happens.

Glad Auto-Protect is On!  We're getting somewhere - hopefully!  :smileyvery-happy:

And your Norton Product is Norton 360, Version 2.0, yes?

I would also suggest following the Document: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2000092815261006?Open&docid=2003022812334513&nsf=sharedtech.nsf&view=0&seg=hm&lg=en&ct.

ok...is manual update when you click on Windows live update icon instead of clicking update on the Norton icon?  If so, I tried both, and get the same results...it appears to be downloading and apply updates for a minute or 2, then just says downloading updates.  The longest I have let it try to update is 3 hrs!!!  It just goes on and on with no completion, and no error message like the one before.  I went to the Symantec AutoFix Tool, and it says I have to log in as Admin to do it....I tried using Symantec Live Update plus NSI as admin, and it still tells me to sign in as Admin....I feel stupid, I dont know why I am having so much trouble to fix this problem.  I really appreciate your patience and help.  Yes I have 2008, Nortons 360, 2.0

Manual LiveUpdate is when you Open your Norton Product and click on "Run LiveUpdate".

Did you try the Support Article I Posted in my last Post?

I went to the Symantec AutoFix Tool, and it says I have to log in as Admin to do it....I tried using Symantec Live Update plus NSI as admin, and it still tells me to sign in as Admin.  I will go again, maybe it will work this time.  I am doing the update like you said.  I'm sure I did them all, but will do it manually.

Maybe I need to log on the "computer" icon as admin?  I will try that.

Evening, Diane,

Del wrote:

That will be it; didn't know that you were Signed On as non-Admin. on your computer...

Good Evening, Ok..I did the Liveupdate, and it ran for 1 hr, 15 min...nothing accomplished there. Still no error messages. I tried admin with the "computer" icon, but its not an option.  I see it on other icons.  Do I restart the computer differently to run as admin?

While looking for ways to do it...I came across Adobe Flash Player 10 Active X in my prgrammes.  It was downloaded Feb 23/09, but file size is blank.  I went to THreatCon, but it says no patches available?  Do you suspect this might be the cause of all these problems?

I'm afraid I'm not very computer savvy (like you didnt already know that!!  lol), but you are teaching me lots.

Are you Signed On to your computer as Administrator?  If you are not, please try Logging On as the Administrator.

And here is the Web Link for the Adobe Flash Player Patch: http://www.adobe.com/support/security/bulletins/apsb09-01.html.
