I just installed Norton Internet Security 2014 on my XP Professional machine to provide some level of protection now since Microsoft has dropped support ox XP. I previously used Microsoft Security Essentials. Meanwhile, I have migrated most of my XP stuff to W/7 machine.
Of course I didn’t have any problems before I installed Norton. The install went well, no issues and the XP machine was well after it restarted, and Norton did it’s Virus scan with only a couple of minor malware issues.
Sometime during the day I thought I saw a flash of Norton messages saying it was deleting some registry entries. No problem at that time.
Shutdown and the next day when I started up I had internet communications problems. The communication hardware enabled and I was able to connect to my home router without problems. However, emails or Chrome couldn’t communicate over the connections.
Went to Event Log and saw that there were several required services that could not start. Following this note I’ve provided the errors. I also saw that PPPoE is being used, I assume Norton does this?
The first thing I did I looked at definitions, ran MalwareBytes, ran Spybot with Rootkit scan, etc. - everything else seemed to work. I ran hard drive DSKCHK without errors. I also ran SysMechanic register check and did get 50 errors but most pertained to the MS Security Uninstall. I didn’t repair the entries. I disabled everything in Norton, restarted, and had the same problems but fewer of them.
I hope someone can help me with the next steps! Is there a way to find a Norton “Restore Point” before its registry deletions? Should I look for an XP “restore Point?” Should I repair the registry entries I found with Sys Mech?
Thanks for the help. Ron
