My Norton is not scanning my computer; It keeps saying that it has scanned 0 files even if I leave it like that for an hour or more. And when I try to stop the scan, it doesnt stop unless I log out. And Norton is the only antivirus installed in my computer. Knowing through previous scanners now uninstalled, I have alot of infected files but to fix it I have to complete the scan first.
Also, after advising us of the questions delphinium asked, you could try and scan the system in Safe Mode. When powering up the system, tap the F8 key until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears and select Safe Mode by using the arrow keys. Press enter and finish the boot process. Once booted, click START > RUN and type navw32.exe /L and then press ENTER.
lets see… spyware terminator, crawler web protection and malwarebytes’ anti malware. ALL UNINSTALLED BY ACCESSING THE CONTROL PANEL, THEN PROGRAMS AND FEATURES AND “UNINSTALL”. i’M using VISTA BASIC and norton internet security 2009
Make sure NIS 2009 is upgraded to its latest build and then initiate a full system scan with compressed file scan enabled in safe mode, with system restore disabled, and with the internet disconnected from the infected computer.

How do I fix this? Thanks.
Also, what do you mean by my norton and needing to log out to stop the scan? Are you refering to the password protection feature for the NIS 2009 settings or the password you use for identity safe?
I mean the only way to stop the scan is too log off/ switch users or shutdown the computer, meaning when i try to cancel or pause the scan, it hangs on “resuming” or “stopping”

I tried that but it just said "could not find navw32.exe/L"
it was able to complete a full system scan and identified a low tracking cookie, i then fixed it, then i shut down and turned on the computer again this time normally. i launched norton and it asked me to fix it. on the process of fixing it, it had to run a quick scan but the quick scan still hangs. is their anyway of doing this in safe mode knowing that it worked earlier but this time fixing my norton? thanks
well in the upper left hand corner where it usually says “secure” it used to say “fix”. but i updated it and restarted now its on “secure”. but i still have the same problem of my scanning hanging but i discovered that custom scans dont hang and work finely. so, it’s really just the full and quick system scans that are still hanging. but, with your advice earlier it was able to scan fully on safe mode.
Since Safe Mode scan is clean and custom scans are clean then let us see if a clean install of NIS2009 will fix problem. When following steps below, in download pages select the page in your language and you will get the proper download files.
1) Copy your Norton key for safe keeping just in case you need it. You should not need this but it is better to have the key on hand than to need it and not have ready access to the key. You can find a copy of your currently installed key in My Documents\Symantec\Norton Internet Security_Key.txt.
2) Download the Norton Removal Tool from this link. Norton Removal Tool Choose the NIS2009 link and download the Norton Removal Tool (NRT) to your desktop. Directions are on the link page.
3) Download the latest version of NIS2009 from this link. Reinstall After Removal Choose the 'I have Norton Internet Security 2006 or later' link on this page. On the next page you can download the latest NIS2009 installation software. Save the file on your desktop also.
4) Disconnect from the Internet until your system needs the connection later in the process.
5) Go to START > Norton Internet Security > Uninstall and let NIS2009 uninstall itself. It will want to reboot the machine. Let it.
6) During the booting of your system, go to Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu is shown. Choose the Safe Mode option (no network or command prompt).
7) In Safe Mode, run the NRT tool. When the tool is finished, click on the Reboot to restart your system.
8) Let Windows boot into normal mode now.
9) Install NIS2009 by double clicking the file you downloaded and saved to your desktop in step 3.
10) When the installation asks for your key or says activating your product, reconnect to the internet then (plug your cable in or turn on the wireless card). [Note: The installation may not ask for your key and activate by using the previous key on the system. Your system will still need to connect to the internet at this point so updated definitions can be downloaded.]
11) Run the Live Update process manually until Live Update reports that there are no more updates to download, NIS2009 is fully up to date.
12) Reboot your system now to insure that any components updated during step 11 are loaded properly.
13) See if your error is fixed now. (See if Quick Scan still hangs or completes normally.)
Please download SUPERAntiSpyware from this LINK . Choose the Freeware version as this will not interfere with the NIS2009 scanning engine. Install the software and update the definitions. Then boot into Safe Mode and run a full system scan. Have SAS fix / delete whatever it finds. Save the log file from the scan and report the log back here in a post. Thank you.
