My son figured out how to disable Norton Online Family time limitation

My son informed me that his Norton was broken when I discovered he was spending way to much time on the computer than he had been allocated.

Checked and found the doggie icon was broken

Told him to reboot

Checked and found the Norton Online Family web portal was down (cannot log in)

2 days later checked the web portal again and found the same issue (cannot log in). Apparently the service has been down for 2 days -

Checked my sons computer and the Norton Online Family doggie icon was responding again. My son told me he figured out how to disable it by doing the following:

When his computer time is up and the Norton Online Online Family 60 second count down time reaches 2 seconds he shutdown windows by clicking on Start->Shutdown

Windows shutdown prompts him that programs are running and he has two options  "Force shutdown" or "Cancel" he clicks on Cancel

At this time his computer is in a state where Norton  Online Family does not log him off and he continues using it.  He told me he has been using this trick for about two weeks now.

When in this state, clicking on the Norton Online Family icon dog and selecting "view time remaining" states, "You have either used up the allowed computer time for today or you are blocked from using the computer at this time. If you choose to continue, your parents will be notified"

II have not received any notifications from Norton Online Family for since November 4th.

Hi

If you are tired of the server being down and blocking you check these:

1/ maybe your browser has cookie problems => close it and re-open OR go in your options and clean the cookies

2/ maybe the server is really down - these happened a few weeks ago for several weeks => Then you might want to just uninstall it. If so, since the server down you may have problems because you cannot validate your uninstallation NOF account & pwd. No panic :reboot your computer in safe mode (type F8 all the time when starting the PC). Then no pwd will be asked. This is actually a hacking of NOF opened for XP early versions because Admin pwd is not so safe.

Hopes it helps you.

Another hacking way that I discovered and intend to report to NOF is shown on the following links. I looked for it because I couldn't understand how my teenager could workaround the time limits....

Good luck with parenting !
