N.I.S. 2009: Idle-Time Scan

I’ll second the frustration with the idle scan.  I am running a dual core processor with 2 gigs of ram.  When the blasted idle scan gets under way, it takes no less than TEN MINUTES from the time I start typing or doing something before Norton quits doing whatever it is that it is doing.  My machine’s not anything spectacular, but it ain’t that slow!  The main reason I went to Norton (2008 version) originally was that it was the only program that seemed to work well with Vista.  My father in law recently switched to McAfee with success, so I may be looking at different software.

Hi WVOz1970,

Perhaps there is an issue with your NIS 2009 settings or installation, because based upon checking my scan history, the Idle Quick Scan and Idle Full Scan work as advertised. Sometimes it is halted when it is only 3 seconds into the scan; and that timing coincides to when I started back doing something on the computer. I have not yet have it "hang" when I went to perform a task.

Just a thought, could you check under Settings > Miscellaneous Settings and be sure you have Full Screen Detection turned on?

Thanks.

I am considering re-installing just to see if it may be a bad install.  I'll check the few settings I can find... that's my other gripe with this new version.  Trying to work through options is confusing as heck, as they seem to provide very limited choices.

Another thought I've had is that this is running on my laptop, which doesn't stay on regularly.  Maybe because it's only getting sporadic opportunities to work, it's trying to do a lot in those few moments.

Finally got in there...  Full Screen Detection is turned "On".

Looking at my scan history the idle quick scan is working perfectly. I left my PC idle for about ½hr on Sunday but the idle full scan still shows as not having run!

It's set on 10 minutes.

Hi Floating_Red, turining off Idle-Time Scan will turn off Idle Full System Scan. NIS performs several other tasks at idle time including the idle quick scan. Can you please clarify what you are seeing that leads you to conclude that the Idle Full System Scan is running?
