N360 AntiSpam Not Working after Change to Exchange Server

Norton 360 Antispam has stopped working after changing Outlook from Pop email to Exchange Server.  Before that, everything worked fine.

Main Computer:

Norton 360 5.02.1

Microsoft Outlook 2003 11.6568.6568 SP2 connected to an Exchange Server – synched same as Notebook

Windows XP with all patches and upgrades

Notebook Computer:

Norton 360 4.3.0.5

Microsoft Outlook 2007 connected to an Exchange Server – synched same as above

Windows 7 with all updates

Norton Antispam is activated on both systems.  All settings in N360 are “On” except “Welcome Screen”.

On the main computer, in Outlook, Tools/Options/Advanced Options/COM Add-Ins, Norton AntiSpam Outlook Plugin is checked.  On the notebook computer these are found in Tools/Trust Center and Norton AntiSpam is listed.

On both computers the Norton Antispam toolbar is there in Outlook and all its buttons work. If I select one or more emails and click “This is Spam”, they are moved to the Norton AntiSpam Folder.  If I select several at once, I can see a Norton box pop up that says Processing Spam (or something like that) as it moves the spam.  In the Norton AntiSpam Folder I can click “Empty the Spam Folder” and the contents are moved to the Deleted Items folder.  However, none of the emails that I identify as spam get marked by N360 as spam.  In the past, anything that was identified manually or automatically as spam and moved to the Norton AntiSpam Folder had the word “Spam” (or something similar) added to the subject line.

What doesn't work, is the automatic filtering by N360. Nothing ever gets automatically moved to the AntiSpam folder and nothing gets [Spam] added to its subject line.  As a result, much spam is staying in my Inbox.  I even tagged a regular recipient as spam (This is Spam) and future emails from that recipient were NOT processed by N360 as spam.

I tried unchecking Tools/Options/Advanced Options/COM Add-Ins, Norton AntiSpam Outlook Plugin and turning it off in N360 Settings, then rebooting and opening Outlook.  The toolbar was gone.  I then closed Outlook and turned the settings back on and saw it reactivated in Outlook – but still no change in operation.

Having much experience with Norton Tech support, I pretended to be on a telephone support session.  On the main computer I downloaded and ran buDump.exe then Norton_Removal_Tool.exe.  I then downloaded and installed the latest version of N360 (5.02.1).  I rechecked all settings.  I get the same results.

Both Outlooks synchronize fine.  If I manually tag an email as spam on one, the server updates and the other computer updates to reflect the email being moved to the Norton AntiSpam Folder.

Hi Rps,

AntiSpam filtering (adding Norton AntiSpam to the subject line of Spam emails, and moving it automatically to Norton AntiSpam folder)works only if the Oulook is configured for POP3/SMTP. I don't think it will work with Microsoft Exchange since that may use SSL and ports can be different.

Thanks - though I don't fully understand the "how" or "why".

Does this affect whether incoming email and attachments are being checked for viruses?

Is the above documented anywhere?

Thanks,

Bob

Hi Bob,

This is mentioned in the following Symantec KB:

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=v52738208_EndUserProfile_en_us

Exchange server may be using SSL ports for it's communication. More information can be found in the following post:

Regarding the email scanning for attachments, read the solution from the following thread:
