N360 Installation disables browser networking

N360 5.1.029

Background: Laptop reimaged (reformat and reinstall Windows 7 Home 64 bit), now reinstalling software. Downloaded N360 installation file and it installs fine right up the what seems to be the very last steps while it is showing "activating services" and then it shuts off web browsing completely then says "installation complete."  Good news is PC is completely protected---bad news is that it's completely unusable.

More details:

During the installation I opened web browser and could click on various websites right up until fail point (starting services) and then no more web browsing.

It's like right at the end of the installation Norton SHUTS OFF port 80.

Further:

The N360 installation will not connect to LiveUpdate or complete the registration.

Turning OFF the "smart firewall" does not restore browser connectivity.

IP config shows valid IP and DNS and can ping/tracert to intranet and internet locations by name and number.

When enter IP address of intranet web server in web browser no response.

The only thing that restores browser connectivity is to uninstall Norton.

Problem is repeatable:

I downloaded the Norton removal tool and wiped all norton installations and after reboot attempted download again, same results.

It's a completely clean brand new Windows 7 Home 64bit installation, I can't be the only person having this problem!!!

It's 64bit Windows 7.  Has both 32bit IE and 64bit IE installed.  <???>

Using the Norton download manager to install the N360 product (standard not premier).

N360 ver 5.1.0.29  (N360-ESD-18-6-0-29-EN.exe)

Was browsing around to find the exact moment that the N360 installation caused the browsing to stop.

Browsing resumes as soon as N360 is removed using Norton removal tool.

Hello zx504

Please try using the link I provided and see if that works better and don't go browsing around while the product is installing and being updated. please..If you have the home edition then it may not.

Uninstalled previous installation using Norton removal tool.

Installed using link provided.

Installation stuck on "activating your product" and no browsing capability.

All other network functionality works fine (can access network inside and outside firewall by name and number----all except through browser.)

It's as if PORT 80 was disabled when the Norton service started.

Clarification: Installation finished sucessfully and product is installed (and working) but it will not activate (because it's blocking it's own port 80 traffic from the network) and there's no web browsing capability.

What is your default browser? if it is not Internet Explorer, then set IE as the default browser and then try to activate the Norton product. If you receive an Activation failed window, click next a few times. Then you may get a Web page with some copy paste steps to activate the Norton product (I've seen this one or two times, hope it is available for the latest version also).

Thanks for the guess.......

IE is the ONLY browser.

It's not just an activation problem.  That the product will not activate is just a SYMPTOM of the real problem.  It can't activate because activation occurs over PORT 80.  Norton has blocked all PORT 80 traffic.

Hello zx504

If Norton was blocking port 80, then there would be a lot of threads here about this problem.

Have you looked at the settings on your network security map? Security is one thing but total isolation isn't the best solution.

If you reimaging the system using a factory recovery disk I would guess that it contains another real time scanner of program causing a conflict.

I never seen a preinstalled system that did not come preloaded with software and trials.
