NAS & Norton A Winning Combo

The proliferation of Network Attached Storage (NAS) units has been phenomenal the last couple of years, (Ref 1). The public and small businesses alike have integrating a NAS unit(s) into their local network or simply just to their home based computer. With every increasing downloadable media, specifically video, the demand for NAS is likely not to subside, (Ref 2).

Most current model NAS units have onboard processors. Almost all NAS units connect to the local network which is often connected to the Internet via a router. Many NAS units have applications will permit the owners to access the NAS unit via a mobile device. Several mobile applications can establish connection to the NAS through the home based computer.

If a NAS has a processor and if the NAS is connected to the Internet, (directly or indirectly), then the NAS is susceptible to attack. Some NAS units permit installation of 3rd party applications onto the NAS unit. As of the date of this post, Norton Tech support (26884432) indicated that Norton does not have a security application for NAS units.

It would seem the exposure would predicate the need. The sheer number of NAS units on the market (Ref 1) should be a clear indication of volume. Existing competition providing NAS protection is none,… (or very expensive).

It would seem this is an untapped market for Norton where they could easily gain almost the entire market share until other caught up and offered their own product. By that time, Norton could be introducing an enhanced release to keep their grip on the market share.

I request that Norton evaluate the business opportunity of introducing a Norton360 type application that can be installed on NAS units. Please specifically, consider the Seagate NAS line of products.
