The 3 Vista HE PC's in my house have all started to suffer the same problem at the same time; Liveupdate fails and I receive the error message "Unable to connect to the Norton LiveUpdate server. Please check your internet connection."
My internet connection is fine and I have followed all technical support suggestions but the problem is still not fixed.
Can anyone else help?
Send me your LU log file. It’s located at C:\ProgramData\Norton( install number)\Norton\LUE\Logs . Zip or compress the file and send it to my email. I will PM you the email address. Check the envelope in the upper right hand corner; it turns yellow when you have a message. I’ll look at it as soon as I get it. Thanks.
Thanks for your quick response. I have emailed you the log file. I’d appreciate any help you can give.

Looked at file and would like you to try this on one of the machines please.
Click Start.
Type cmd.exe in the Start Search box. Right click on the CMD.EXE and choose Run as Administrator.
In the command window type in ipconfig /flushdns and press enter.
Close the cmd window.
In about 3 minutes, runa Live Update session from NIS main window.
Report back here with what happens.
Hi, I have already tried that. Had no effect, same problem still exists. Could this be a problem caused by my ISP?
Yes, I was afraid of that. I should have asked. Anyway the log file shows that Norton can not get any Live Update server DNS information automatically. When NIS2009 tries to revert to some hardcoded addresses, these fail also.
1) ISP DNS is not correct
2) This is the HTTP1.0 / 1.1 error
Have you applied the Hotfixes listed at the top the board? I believe they take care of the second possibility. Please check with your ISP for any changes to DNS service or proxy service to you.
I will check back on this tomorrow; I have this thread in my que to handle so I will be back.
DTM-73,
Did a little more research into this and if you have not done so yet, please see if this HotFix ( from HERE ) will fix the problem. Please post back the results if you have not used this fix yet. HotFixes are listed in a 'sticky' post that has a link at the top of the Norton Internet Security / Norton AntiVirus forum board ("Click Here for Hot Issues and Hot Fixes"). The other Live Update Hot Fix should not apply in this situation but it never hurts to up to date. Directions for downloading and applying the fixes are listed at the links from the 'sticky' post.
Look forward to hearing from you later and solving this issue.
Hi. I tried the hotfix and I think this is one I've already tried as I've run it again and receive the message "Your product is already up to date. Please click OK to exit."
As an FYI, I pulled the server names and address out of the log file and I can successfully ping them all from my PC so I don't think it's a problem caused by my ISP. When I try an FTP connection from my PC I get redirected to the NAV DAT file download page.
Any other ideas? Should I just uninstall the software and reinstall it? (Not that I think I should have to as I assumed there'd have been an quick fix for this).
I have flagged for some 'higher' up help. This problem may be beyond the local side here. One other thing you could do in the meantime, to eliminate the possibility of some redirecting malware from the equation: Download either MalwareBytes AntiMalware ( LINK ) or SUPERAntiSpyware ( LINK ) ; get the free version of either and install the program. Start the program and update the definitions. Run a full system scan and save a log file. If they find anything, have the program correct (delete / repair) the error. If they do find anything, when finished, restart the system and try a update then.
Sorry but it's the middle of the night here and we will have to wait for 'company' time for the help I flagged.
I appreciate the assistance you’ve given so far. I have already installed Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware and run it; it’s come back clean. I look forward to hearing from you further. Thanks.
Glad to hear you’re thinking ahead. To help prove it’s not on your end (really don’t think so) can you try Open DNS on one of the machines? The link for signing up for this service is http://www.opendns.com/ . This should help with the redirect (the FTP result surprised me). If willing, give this a try and post back here. Thank you.
I've registered with OpenDNS and applied their DNS server addresses to my PC and also to my Netgear router. I still get exactly the same error when running liveupdate..
Another FYI for you, when I searched on OpenDNS for 'liveupdate.symantec.com' the results were as below. None of the server addresses in the 'log.lue' file are in the 82.96.xxx.xxx range that OpenDNS returns. Does this point towards the problem?:-
OpenDNS results:-
Europe
London, England, UK
* a568.d.akamai.net
* liveupdate.symantec.d4p.net
* symantec.georedirector.akadns.net
* 82.96.58.14
* 82.96.58.23
* 82.96.58.33
* 82.96.58.41
* 82.96.58.46
* 82.96.58.47
* 82.96.58.49
* 82.96.58.55
* 82.96.58.56
I have also faced this problem. the solution is use open dns server…visit opendns.com and i hope your problem would be solved…mine had solved…if for some reason you can’t get updated. than wait for 2-3 days. i hope it will automaticaly get solved.

I would like to help if I can and when I receive your log file I will take a look. Meanwhile, can we quite sure that the header of this thread is correct i.e. on each machine on each occasion you are receiving 8921,254?
Next question can you name any proxy in existence on your system, and then the name, make, model and firmware of any router.
Do you know if you have a hardware firewall in your router?
These are just preliminary questions. Hope you dont mind.
Hi cgoldman. Yes, I am suffering the same problem on all 3 PC's in my house and the problem started at the same time. All 3 PC's are running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1.
I don't have a proxy server and my router is a Netgear RangeMax WNR854T (firmware version 1.4.34). I have tried resetting the router and also disabling the SPI firewall (and the Windows firewall too) and I'm not blocking any keywords, sites or services - problem still occurs.
I look forward to hearing from you further.
DTM-73, sorry to join this thread so late, I was on vacation...
One of the LiveUpdate folks spotted this thread and asked me to follow up with you. Can you send me the log.lue files? Additionally, I don't know how technically oriented you are, but a wireshark trace of the LiveUpdate session would be very helpful as well. Lastly, does your ISP provide any network filtering features such as parental control?
Hi Reese. I have emailed you "wireshark liveupdate failure.pcap" and "Log.Lue" in a single compresses file "nav2009errorfiles.zip".
Having never used Wireshark before I captured the activity on my wireless ethernet connection whilst running a liveupdate session and then exported the results into a .pcap file. If you require more details then please let me know.
(Hope you had a good vacation).
It's working!!! Out of frustration I reset my router back to manufacturer's default settings and re-configured the SSID and password settings etc and.... LiveUpdate has worked on all 3 PC's. I'm not even going to try and understand what has reset as I have never made any changes to filtering or blocking on the router but, nevertheless, it HAS resolved the problem. Powering off and on again did nothing, a complete reset was the answer.
I can only assume that there must be a particular service or port (or something) that LiveUpdate uses as none of my 3 PC's has had any other problems with using the internet.
I'd like to thank those who took the time and effort to help resolve this problem, and OpenDNS.org is just what I need now that two of my children are growing up and using their PC more and more.
DTM-73, thanks for following up. I’m glad to hear that it’s working for you now! I hope that my minimal guidance was all that was required to put you on the right track
ah, you got there before me. Well done! Glad its working.
