Auto-Protect will scan the Files that are related to the icons in the Task Bar beside the clock when the system loads up and the Files/Folders that you use and any other start-up program.  Also, it will can re-movable media when it is inserted.

You can view all of NAV's quick and full scan history by opening the main user interface, selecting "History", and choosing "Scan Results" from the drop-down menu. If by real time scanner you mean Auto Protect, you shouldn't have to worry, as Floating_Red is correct. Provided that it has not been disabled, real time monitoring should run without problems and notify you if a malicious program is detected. I recommend playing around with the "History" section as it is quite detailed and should show that NAV is indeed working.

During NAV's installation, if a program is found with known conflicts, the installer should notify you and recommend that you remove it.
