I downloaded the NAV 2011 update to my current installation of NAV 2010. When I run the installer for NAV 2011, it tells me that Norton SystemWorks is an incompatible application and must be uninstalled before installing NAV 2011. Prior to trying the NAV 2011 update, I had successfully downloaded and installed the latest update to SystemWorks (2009, I believe). However, when I installed SystemWorks, I did NOT install NAV as part of it, assuming the NAV that came with SystemWorks 2009 was older than the NAV 2010 I already had installed. I have had SystemWorks and NAV running together for years on my machines. What’s going on now? It’s a disservice to purchasers of two different Symantec programs that they will not run together anymore. Howard
Hi,
as Norton SystemWorks has been canceled, it is possible that some incompatiblity will appear because of this.
What you can try is this:
1. Remove all actual Norton product from your machine using the Norton Removal Tool (www.norton.com/nrt)
2. Install Norton AntiVirus 2011
3. Install Norton SystemWorks (only the system tools part)
4. Run both LiveUpdate until there's no more update
After this check if everything works fine.
But if you use Windows 7, do not install SystemWorks! It is only compatible with Windows XP and Vista.
Let us know the results.
I have also tried to install NAV 2011 on Windows XP with SystemWorks 2009 installed, it seems that you are right. Both products seem to be incompatible, besides, SystemWorks 2009 (12.0) - the latest version, has been discontinued and replaced with Norton Utilities 14 - compatible with Windows XP, Vista, and 7. SystemWorks does not support Windows 7.
Let me also tell you that I have tried the suggestion given by PapauZ and it seems to work. Remove both products, install NAV 2011 first, and then NSW 2009 without the antivirus component. Another option is to downgrade to NAV 2010 or use Norton Utilities instead of SystemWorks.
Have in mind that one of the newest Symantec products - Norton 360 is an all-in one security suite which also offers automatic PC-tune up and backup. You can try the product for free at any time and If you decide to use it in future, you won't need NAV or SystemWorks/Norton Utilities.
Yes I too have that issue. I have NAV 2010 with NSW Premier Edition 2009 and was offered autoupdate to NAV2011.
I just sent a support request to Symantec about it. Not expecting much back but we will see.
Some questions about removing NSW then installing NAV2011 and then re-installing NSW.
Does this mean we have to repeat this process for future updates to NAV2011?
What about Norton 360 2011 - Does it have similar demands on NSW? I am expecting so.
If Symantec cannot build new product that is compatible with other recent product then a patch should released to continue usage of, in this case, NSW.
Otherwise Symantec are saying that NSW Life cycle has finished.
There is no way I have had what anyone could call an acceptable life out of the NSW software.
If not patched then purchase price should be refunded.
If Symantec continue this crap then I am over them.
Hi,
Please post a screenshot of the error message that you receive. Also, please make sure that you do not have the AntiVirus part of SystemWorks installed. I do not think we need to downgrade the NAV product. We can try to get more information on this.

Hi hspindel, Vejdin, and beales,
Please assist us in gathering debug logs for this issue.
Here is how you can collect debug logs:
1) Visit the below site:
http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080507162141EN
2) Make one change to the steps listed:
Step 2.6: Check all the advanced options
3) In the end, no files will be sent to Symantec automatically. You will be shown the location of the logs after you complete the form after hitting the "finish" button.
Let me know when you have the logs ready, I will help you to upload it.

Hello
The problem I think of installing NAV 2011 first and then trying to reinstall System Works without the NAV part is that the key for System Works has to be entered in the NAV part of the System Works install.in order for the Utilities portion to be validated.
Do debug logs cover installation issues? It seems to me that this problem would be easy enough for Symantec to reproduce without debug logs anyway.
SymNRA log covers installation issues also. At the time when you gather logs and upload them, upload the Norton Installer folder in your system. That may also help.

Thanks to the contributors who read my earlier post & responded. I appreciated it.
The issue has now been solved.
Even though I had removed the NAV part of NSW some time ago I un-installed NSW w the the normal Win XP Add & Remove. Then ran the NAV 2011 installer without problems.
Reinstalled NSW (minus NAV of course).
All Good & OK.
I did receive a reply from Symantec Tech Support that said to uninstall all Norton Stuff and then run the Norton Removal tool that Symantec offer.
It was simpler for me to first try just the NSW uninstall rather than the clean out with Norton removal tool. The removal tool removes all Norton products on your PC including my copy of WinfaxPro which requires a bit of stuffing around with printers and existing data retention when reinstalling
The other thing Symantec Tech support also said that this re-installation of NSW is a once off and wont need to be repeated for any future updates to NAV 2011.
I do think Symantec have been alarmist with the over-convincing message of NSW being an Incompatible Application. Should just asked to uninstall NSW and reinstall later. It clearly is not incompatible.
Hi Folks,
I do want to mention as someone else did earlier that although NAV and NSW are compatible provided that the AV portion of NSW is not installed, NSW has in fact been discontinued and is only supported up through Windows Vista.
Just an FYI for when anyone reading this is planning to upgrade to Windows 7 (or later when released).
Best wishes.
Allen
I believe System works is replaced by Norton ultilties.

Hi Tywin7,
Yes Norton Utilities is the closest thing to NSW and is recommended for those looking for a replacement for NSW.
I wanted to make sure everyone understands that NSW itself is no longer offered or supported past Vista though.
Best wishes.

Hi,
I agree that there are other products like Norton Utilities available now. However there should not be any compatibility issues between Norton 2011 products and NSW 12.0. If there are any compatibility issues reported, then they may be able to find the root cause. I think that is the reason why Sheenn tries to gather log files for this problem.

Had to uninstall everything using Norton Removal Tool. Then I upgraded to Norton Utilities. It’s all working now. But it’s nearly an annual pain with Symantec installers almost always having to use the Removal Tool and reinstalling everything. Since I use NAV, Utilities, Ghost, and WinFax, this is a big production. I wish the Norton Removal Tool would allow us to choose one application at a time to clean out.
Hello hspindel
This is a good suggestion that you can make in the New Ideas part of the Forum. You can create a thread there and you can also look at the other threads there and kudo and post in the other threads also. They do act on some of the threads and do enter the ideas into the products.
Here is the link for the New Ideas part of the Community

Thanks.

I suspect one reason why this isn't done is that different applications may use common files and so if you completely remove all files associated with one application you may be removing some that a remaining application needs.
So the Norton Removal Tool is very much an "if all else fails .... "
I agree Norton Removal Tool is “if all else fails”. Trouble is, “all else fails” nearly annually for me.

I agree whole heartedly. The catch all removal with removal tool is not needed and causes a lot of work reinstalling.
Clearly winfaxpro for example is independent of the latest NAV stuff.
I left it installed and the NAV installers went OK. Have not tested the other installers like N360 though.
I was able to avoid using the Removal Tool altogether I only used windows add & remove for NSW. The NAV installer went OK.
The underlying vibe here is that these "old" applications must have something going for them if so many still have them in active use.
Therefore why retire them and replace with something so much less effective particularly the latest Norton Utilities.
