NAV.exe

I am running win xp sp3. Recently I noticed two files in task manager marked NAV.exe. The system one runs frequently using 100% of the resources for long periods making my computer unusable. I can't disable it and I'm not sure what to do. I'm pretty sure it's Norton associated. Help appreciated!!

Hi tydmeter

It is the Norton product and the system refers to the Norton product running so to find out what the memory/cpu is being use for click on performance and the window will flip and on the graph where Norton is yellow and windows is blue, you can hover on the graph to get a black triangle that will trace over the graph and then click and a small window will open that has processes that can be clicked on.

Hi tydmeter, and welcome. There would normally be two nav.exe items in your Task Manager. One for System and one for User {Your name}.

Occasionally there will be a spike in usage, particularly when a scan is taking place.

Are you running any other real time protection programs, such as MalwareBytes Pro or SuperantiSpyware Pro ?

HI and thanks for the reply. No, I'm not running any other protection programs (that I know of) but something interesting took place after I posted. I decided to do a restore because the problem seems to have started when I installed a new Canon printer this past weekend, I restored my computer to just before the printer installation and the problem has diminished considerably. For some reason or other, my machine is also much faster. I can't imagine how the printer installation caused a problem but I think it did. I used the installation discs that came with the printer and it installed a program from FlexNet Software that looks for updates to the Canon programs and others as well. I uninstalled that program at the time of installation (using a mystery uninstaller) and I think that is when the problem started. I'm not sure that it's completely solved but I'll know this week.

Sometimes, 3rd party programs can cause problems. I suggest you run NAV LiveUpdate until no more are found, and try a reboot, if you haven't already. That often fixes things as well !
