Hello,
I purchased a 3 user license package of NAV 2008. I installed it on three computers running XP Pro SP2 or SP3, and it works fine on two of them.
On my main computer the whole system hangs after scanning about 400,000 files when I run full system scan. I can't even abort the program. I have to push the power button to turn the computer off.
Interestingly, when I run custom scans of subsets of my system such as the Windows or Program Files folders and all sub-contents, the scan completes with no problems, even if it scans many more files than 400,000.
I have downloaded a new version of NAV2008. I must remove my current copy before I can install this.
My questions are:
1. Will removing the current copy free up my license so I can install the newly downloaded version and have the license activate the new copy?
2. Is this the best way to solve my problem? If not, what else should I try?
I did run the Norton fix utility but that did not resolve my problem.
Thanks for your help.
Maurice Frank
Floating_Red,
Thank you for your advice.
I did what you said: Live Update, Safe Mode, Full System Scan.
The scan hung at around 395,000 files. Same result as before. However, I was able to abort the program this time, unlike before.
I will try removing some programs I can do without. I will also try a full system scan excluding my music folder, which is very large.

Can you try the steps in the document Scan stops and then try to run a scan.
Vineeth,
Thanks, I will try this. I was not aware of this option. I do have many zip files.

Vineeth,
Thanks again for this helpful advice. I turned off the scanning of compressed files, and I ran a full system scan. the scan completed without any errors, but it only scanned 184,500 files -- a fraction of what it used to scan.
While I am glad to have completed a scan, my concern now is about the compressed files -- if they are not being scanned, isn't that a vulnerability?

Hi,
Sorry for the delay in the response.
The Auto-Protect module of Norton AntiVirus loads with Windows as a virtual device driver, or VxD. As Auto-Protect runs in the background, it protects your system by scanning files for viruses, Trojan horses, and worms. Auto-Protect scans all files that are received from any source, such as the Internet, removable disks, or email attachments. Auto-Protect scans files for viruses, Trojan horses, and worms any time that the files are accessed, such as when they are copied, moved, run, or opened.
So even if the compressed files are not scanned during a full system scan, you do not have to worry as they would have undergone a scan while you received them.
While scanning a compressed file,Autoprotect needs to decompress the file, scan it's contents and then it has to compress the file again. If there are any issues with the file, Norton will not be able to compress it. At that point the full system scan runs in to a loop and stalls there.
No need to worry, as I said Autoprotect scans each and very entry while receiving it and sending it. Also while modifying the file.

There is a problem, though, with Auto-Protect: It only Scans files you are using. You are not 100% safe with Auto-Protect and I write from experience here; you have to Scan Compressed Files in a Full System Scan.
It could be that it is a bad install, so I would suggest using the Norton Removal Tool; you get to re-install your Product after you re-start from using the N.R.T..
Thanks again to both of you.
I will try NRT and a re-install.
This may be caused by an Internet Threat on your computer.
Please run LiveUpdate and do a Full System Scan in Safe Mode; if the problem still occurs, report back here.
