Could you elaborate a bit on the “couldn’t get the Protection Center” problem, and the “NAV stopped again” problem? Are you unable to launch the product? Are there error messages that appear? Also, since you think this might be related to your printer, which make and model printer do you have? Do you have the latest driver installed? I apologize for my questions; I want to be sure we understand the problem thoroughly and can give you the best answers as quickly as possible. Thanks!

i wonder if you got infected with something… nasty stuff might have woke up and decided to fight…

Yes - NAV will not launch.  clicking on the .exe file does nothing - it's like there is nothing behind the file name.  No error message, just nothing happens.  It's not the printer (Dell AIO A920), as it's been operating along with NAV2005 for years, as well as NAV2008 when it was running.  the printer has the latest driver, which I put on when I finally got it back to operating after the Symantec tech messed it up while fixing (for a week) NAV2008.  The printer is still working, but NAV stopped after a week.

[Side note - have been updating the virus signatures manually for 3 years, first with NAV2002, then with NAV2005 and now NAV2008, as no one from Symantec has been able to figure out how to get AutoUpdate to work on the computer!]

All suggestions will be appreciated.  If I need to uninstall and reinstall, is NRT necessary?  And how do I get a new download of NAV2008, as it is now past the 30-day download period (what with all the troubles).

Thanks

Hi Bob,

I'm a bit confused, and I apologize for the follow-up questions. It seems that you had Norton AntiVirus 2005 installed on your system, and were renewing the subscription to that product yearly, is that correct? Then you installed the trial version of Norton AntiVirus 2008, and you began to have problem with the printer. What exactly were the problems? Did your system not detect the printer? If you opened the Device Manager, were you able to see the printer listed in the devices?

It may be a good idea to use the Norton Removal Tool and purchase the full version of Norton AntiVirus 2008. Thanks!

Hi Tony,

I agree that the scenario is somewhat confusing - will give it to you in chronological order

1.  Bought the Dell computer with XP in 2003 - it came loaded with a trial version of NAV2002.

2.  Renewed NAV2002 when the trial version expired, and continued renewing it until Symantec said it could no longer be renewed.

3.  Installed NAV2005 from a 3-version disc  (had got it for my other machines).  LiveUpdate would not work, and after three times of no success with Symantec techs trying to get LiveUpdate to work, spent the next three years renewing NAV2005 and manually updating the virus signatures weekly.

4.  In June 2008, subscription to NAV2005 ran out.  Was offered NAV2008 at the same price as renewing NAV2005, so took it.  Installed it and it worked (except for LiveUpdate).  A week later it stopped working and I couldn't start it.  Contacted Symantec via the on-line help and, at the request of the tech, gave him control of the machine to remotely try to fix it.  After a time, he got NAV2008 working, I thanked him and signed off.  Then I found that something the tech had done had managed to disconnect the printer communications and the printer wouldn't work!

5.  Worked with the Dell printer forum and got some tips on haw to possible correct the printer problem. Meanwhile, NAV2008 had stopped working again after a week!

6.  Using the Dell forum tips, I got the printer working again and, lo and behold, NAV2008 also started working!  It lasted for another week and then stopped again.

 7.  Two days ago I tried various ways to start NAV2008.  Double-clicking on the desktop icon didn't work [start in:  "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Norton Antivirus|", target: "C:\Program Files\Common files\Symanec Shared\NPC\2.0\uiStub.exe." {68175F05-68E7-47e7-A1F2-4CE1DEE316EE}.  Then looked in Startup and found ccapp "C:\Program Files\Symantec Shared\ccapp.exe" - tried "run now" but nothing happened.  Then I rebooted the computer (the computer is never off unless I am installing or reinstalling something which requires a restart, as I keep it on Standby). and NAV started!!!  And so far, it's still working.

So, some questions.

1.  Why would restarting the  computer start NAV when trying to open the ccapp.exe file or double-clicking the desktop icon wouldn't work?  Are these targets/files incorrect?

2.  What is the proper .exe file to open to get NAV to run, and where is it?

Thanks,

Bob

Well, Nav32.exe would be the one to look for, but the problems seems a bit strange. If you do not have any other Symantec product installed on your system, I would recommend using the Norton Removal Tool to wipe all Norton products from your system, then reinstall Norton AntiVirus 2008 on your system. These problems seem strange, and are most likely the side effect of another issue. Please let me know if you have any other problems after you try this suggestion. Thanks!

Thanks Tony - will try that if (or when) NAV stops working again.  Don't have any other Symantec products on system - did have GoBack but it was erased a year ago when I had to use NRT for some other problem.  How do I get Symantec to let me download another copy of NAV2008 after I use the NRT?  I thought that I only had 30 days for free downloads.

If you have a current full subscription for Norton AntiVirus 2008, that information is retained on your system (or if you completely wipe your drive, you can visit mynortonaccount.com to retrieve your activation key, providing you've setup a Norton Account). When you run the Norton Removal Tool, then reinstall Norton AntiVirus 2008, the isntallation picks up the previous subscription information. But this is only for customers with a full subscription. From your previous post, I thought you purchased a subscription for Norton AntiVirus 2008. Is that not the case?

Tony - you are right - I have a full subscription.  I just didn't realize that NRT didn't remove that information.  When I use it, I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks

Bob
