Red you run Vista home premium as your OS? Do you use the vista firewall? I notice thatt there is one item that stays on if you hit default and the is core services(?) should that remain as a firewall exception?
If I am honest, I would not use Windows' Firewall as they are not very good; symantec's is much better.
If you trust the "Core Services", then yes, have that as the "Firewall Exception"; maybe someone else could comment on this.
Red, would you say that a safer process would be to use NIS2009?

Yes. N.I.S. 2009 has a two-way Firewall. How Smart is that? :)
I have replied to your Thread in the N.I.S. Forum.
I never really saw the need for two way firewall, but I guess if you get dinged and something negative gets on your comp, its another way to find it out.
If you only did have an In-bound Firewall, yes, it is an excellent Feature and a must-have (one of many must-haves in Secuirty Software), but, it you have an Out-bound Firewall, then this may make it “less-likely” that hackers will try to get in to your system because they will know that there is a very good chance they will get blocked by the Out-going Firewall and if the user checks their Logs on a regular basis…
sorry for the stupid and frequent questions. As this is about NIS and firewalls, I think my next stupid quetion will pertain to this thread.
I hear a lot about how outsiders will use a person's computer to send out spam email or even worse porn. Would the 2 way firewall stop this nonesense? Does NIS2009 have features to stop such junk too?
Since it has an In-bound and an Out-bound Firewall (Smart Firewall), the stuff should be getting blocked.
I'm planning on getting NAV2009 and using my vista firewall. However, I'm not sure if it is an inbound firewall or a two way firewall.
Might anyone know the answer to this?
Also, if I set the firewall to allow no unsolicited inbound connections, can I still get my Norton updates? I was told once that there really should be no unsolicited inbound connections on a home PC. That the updates come by the home PC connection TO the internet and asking for updates.
It will most-likely just be an In-bound Firewall from previous Windows' Software.
Yes you will still get Norton Updates. You should set your Firewall to block all un-solicited connections as these could be used by Trojans to Attack your system.
