NAV2010 crashes Windows Media Player 11 by refusing access to ccsvchst.exe

Hello fellow Norton users,

since more than a year I am a satisfied customer of Norton Antivirus 2009. It is using low resources, has good ratings in AV-tests, and is very unintrusive.

About three months ago I upgraded to Norton Antivirus 2010. Since about two months I have very frequent, but not always, the effect, that Norton Antivirus 2010 is crashing Windows Media Player 11:

Playing an AVI-video in WMP works fine, but if you try to use the forward and rewind buttons, WMP11 crashes without an error message. The WMP process just terminates. Sometimes it works, if you first pause the video, and then try the forward and rewind button.

It must have something to do with NAV2010, because at the same time, that WMP11 crashes, you can find the following entry in the NAV event history log:

Attacker:          ...\WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER\WMPLAYER.EXE

Attacker-PID:  788

Target:             ...\Norton AitiVirus\Engine\17.5.0.127\ccsvchst.exe

Target-PID:    1764

Action:             Accessing process data

Reaction:       Unauthorized access logged

In fact: This entry shows up two times in the event log with identical data.

Since about one week the system of my kids - having the same system setup - experiences the very same behavior. As a consequence, the Windows Media Player is unusable right now!

I used alternatively the "Media Player Classic", which does not show the same behavior: It does not crash. But since the WMP is used widely in the system, I would like to get it up and running again.

I have the following system(s):

- Windows XP SP3 - 32bit

- Windows Media Player 11.0.5721.5268

- Norton Antivirus 17.5.0.127

Does anybody experienced this behavior and has a remedy for it?

What could I try to prevent this from occuring?

Any help would be appreciated.

Best regards,

LittleAlf
