I have seen a problem on 2 different machines today where I have booted from the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool (NBRT) disk and, after entering my product key, it downloads updated definitions and then goes to "Preparing Scan...", where it remains forever (or at least for 5 hours!!). I used 2 different NBRT disks, although both were downloaded from the ISO file at:
If your are trying to use the NBRT to remove malware it is possible that the malware is preventing drive access. By this I mean it is possible that the drive's MBR has been altered in such a way that it makes the drive unreadable by other programs other than itself. It is also possible that the drives in question may be about to fail.
That's a good thought, but after it hung up, I rebooted with the network cable removed so NBRT was not able to get updates and just used the 10/03/09 definitions. This time it showed "Preparing Scan" for a short while (< 2 minutes) and then went on to scan the drive, so the problem appears to be in the update process or perhaps the specific update that was available yesterday.
Any other ideas ??
Anyone else run NBRT with the 12/05/09 definition update downloaded ??
