History: START. I tried to download a free copy of Malwarebytes to my computer so I could move it to a removeable drive. I already had a licensed copy on that same computer on the C drive. Nevermind that what I tried cannot be done.
when I tried to run the licensed copy on my C drive, I got the runtime error codes 0 and 440. The other copy never did work.
CONVERSATION WITH MALWAREBYTES: So I contacted Malwarebytes support for permission to uninstall and reinstall the licensed copy. I told them what I had attempted.
They said that it was impossible to get those runtime errors without an infection.
So, we ran rsit...avenger.....HIJACK THIS.....then, we downloaded new runtime codes from microsoft to replace the old ones.
We did remove a few lines of problem stuff listed in the HIJACK THIS log. Not malware, but easily manipulated stuff.
OH, one file was listed as only being at its location when being used by malware. That was gr something. I'll get it if someone wants to know.
None of that fixed the problem or even shed light on what the problem might be.
I simply repeated that I had damaged the licensed copy when I attempted to download another copy on top of it trying to get a copy to a removeable drive.
So, I went ahead and uninstalled and reinstalled the new copy and activated it.
IT runs great. Or, I should say it runs with no error codes.
NOW THE QUESTION: Still, they want to run COMBOFIX because they are dedicated to the premise that only some form of malware could have corrupted the licensed copy that I was running and that it is deeply embedded and hiding even though I get no codes with the new copy.
So, what do you think? I run Norton almost every day. I run Windows defender a couple of times a week. I clean all caches, folders, and cookies, keep it updated. I have used NU to fix the registry. Don't know if that corrupted MB.
Do you think it is fixed or should I go along and run the COMBOfix just for the exercise?
Thanks for all opinions.......
