Need to uninstall Norton Family to upgrade Norton Security

I need to upgrade my Norton Security (I am on ver 5 from 2011 and never received an alert that there was an update).  Through the Norton site, I found directions to uninstall current version of Norton Security then run Norton Removal Program.  Well the Norton Removal program says to remove Systematic WinFax Pro so I search for this program and another Norton site clarifies that this is the Safety Program (which I guess is now called Family and only other Norton program on my computer).  So, no problem, I proceed to remove and it will not take the password and cannot get to website.  So now I am running without a security program because the Family program is down.

Is there a backdoor way to uninstall?  Or do I ignore the Norton Removal Program as the directions state?
