I have been having quite a lot of problems with my internet connection dropping. My ISP ran their line test and said I have a good signal down to the Modem and the modem response also looks good. When I run a Ping from DOS mode, it comes back in the range of 550ms to 600ms (sort of high, I think). I've noticed this Recent History messages and was wondering if they could give a clue to my problems? Full scans with NIS 2011, Malwarebytes' and SuperAntiSpyware all show there is no malware showing on my PC.
It looked to me like NIS updated 102 Firewall rules, then my IP address disappeared and was no longer being protected, then another message that said it was protecting my connection with a different IP address, then it connected to a protected network, then connected to a shared network then started all over again when my IP address disappeared. Does this sound like I have a PC network card problem or could my ISP be having problems? Is there a way I could check the operation of my Network Card, to prove it was operating correctly?

SendOfJive - Thanks for thinking about a solution to my question. When I lose Internet connection, the lights on the modem seem to be operating normally, the Power light is steady on, the DS and US lights are steady on, the online light is steady on and the Link light is blinking at a steady pace. They don't seem to change, even if I turn my PC off the lights stay the same. The modem is an Arris and is about two months old.
Aside from the old Ping request, is there a way to check the Ethernet card or does it either works or it doesn't work?
You could run Windows XP Network Diagnostics. In Internet Explorer click Tools > Diagnose Connection Problems....
SendOfJive - Would you be a little more descriptive about where to find "Diagnose Connection Problems...."? I went to tools and looked for Diagnose Connection Problems.... but couldn't find that option in IE8.
Are you using the Tools option in the Command Bar or the Menu Bar? It should be in both. RIght click on one of the toolbars if you need to make the Menu Bar visible. If you can't find it it may not be installed. You can get it here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914440
The Networks Diagnostic should also be available via Control Panel > Network and Internet Connections. It should appear in the Troubleshooters pane on the left.
SendOfJive - I've added that command to my START - RUN - CMD program so next time I have internet failure, I'll be able to run the Diagnostic program. Maybe that program will narrow the search for a solution. Thanks for your help..
