Hey there. I've looked for this problem in the forums before posting but I can't find the exact same thing. Hope this isn't a duplicate ...
I have 5 PCs on a LAN - 3 wired and 2 wireless. My printers (an HP LaserJet and Canon PIXMA) are connected to one of the PCs (set up as a FileServer with Vista SP2) and are network shared. Both printers are USB connected and 'talk' to the printing PCs by way of giving feedback and info on the print job and ink/toner status.
Whenever I send a print job to the server, the jobs print fine but doing so always initiates the same NIS ALERT popup:
"An intrusion attempt by 192.168.1.100 was blocked." [fixed IP of the FileServer]
When I ask for more information I get:
Network traffic from 192.168.1.100 matches the signature of a known attack. The attack resulted from System.
Attacking Computer: 192.168.1.100, 5355
Destination: 192.168.1.101, 54882 <-- my PC
Traffic Description: UDP, 5355
The PCs are all in the same Workgroup and are all in the same IP range, they are all shown be part SHARED when I look at the NIS network map and they are all running the same version of NIS 2010. Automatic Printer/File Sharing Control is set to ON.
If I turn off Intrusion Detection then, naturally, the error goes away.
So I added a Rule under Smart Firewall, General Rules (right at the top) allowing any communication from any computer in the subnet using any port and any protocol. Made no difference. Then I did the same specify the IP and the PORTs that were referenced. No luck,
Given that I know the outbound PC, ports, and protocols, how do I resolve this???
TIA
