Network Security Map

Have2 computers, one is VISTA, one is Win7.  Connect to WLAN via Netgear 2000 wireless router.  Everything works OK, but

I see discrepencies when looking at security map from one computer to the other.  My Win7 is connected via ethernet cable to a ethernet jack on router; router is connected to a DSL modem, which connects to internet.  Since my Win7 machine is in effect a wired LAN connection and my VISTA is a wireless LAN connection, could this be the cause of discrepancies?  Just curious

(I believe when I had both connected thru wiireless, things look more in line)

You are correct on the status indicator; it should change to something very quickly.  What is your physical network configuration, please?

Maybe it wasn't such an easy question to answer after all..  I only have one PC connected to my ISP through an ARRIS Cable modem that they provided.  When I checked the "Network Firewall and Connections" it shows there are no items to view.  When I looked at the Firewall Activities, it shows a list of about 25 items that the severity shows as "INFO" activities and no action required.

One thing I just noticed, in the Network Security Map, it shows my adaptor manufacturer as ASUSTek Computer Inc. and when I checked my IPCONFIG/all settings, it shows the adapter as NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller??  I don't know if that adapter is for the same thing or not.  The information for the Host name, physical address and IP Address shows the same information on both the Security Map and IPconfig.

My Network Details shows "Local Area Connection" and "Total in Network" shows about 300± several.  When I click on Device Name "Edit", again it shows the same information for the IP address, Physical address, and My PC's name.  The Category shows "Desktop PC".

If I click on Edit Network Details, it shows the Adapter name is "Local Area Connection", the Adapter Description as NVDIA nForce Networking Controller (Different from the other screen??) and the Gateway address is the same but the Gateway Physical Address only shows up on this Edit Network Details screen, not in IPconfig/all.  The Trust level is set to "Protected".

Anything else I can look at?

That’s interesting because it would point to the fact (or theory right now) that the Network Neighborhood is getting the information from the Gateway and subnet information.  Your “Refreshing” message is because the map is scanning 300+ / - systems.  I would talk to the cable ISP and see if there is something to do to isolate your system from the rest.  i would recommend not to ever change your level of protection below “Protected” until they do so.

dbrisendine,  Just to make things more interesting, this morning when I logged in, the Security Status is showing “Secure”.  Maybe it took overnight to check all 300± of those other Devices :smileyvery-happy:

Check with your ISP about that modem and see if there is any kind of NAT you can turn on.  That’s a lot of devices to keep checking; that has got to be dragging your net speed down.

Hopefully an easy question, to get an answer to.  When I click on “View Network Security Map”, my Security Status is always showing “Refreshing”.  There is a green circle with arrows pointing in clockwise direction.  Shouldn’t the Security Status change to “Secure” or something?

17.0.0.136.

After editing the trust level (changed it from shared to trusted) in the network security map and rebooting, it reverts to shared. How can I prevent it from switching back to shared?

Hello skypx,

From the main interface go to Network Settings > Smart Firewall > Advanced Settings > Configure.

In the Advanced Settings Window look for Automatic File/Printer Sharing Control and turn it OFF. Click Apply and OK your way out.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the suggestion Phil_D, but I noticed if I edit the trust level of the devices in the network security map individually vs. via network details, the settings remain the same after a reboot. Hopefully the specified trust level will remain unchanged as time goes by.

I just installed NIS 2011 on my laptop after I uninstalled NIS 2010

Under Network Security Map there should be 3 devices showing:

 My laptop

My XBOX

My Desktop

There is only the Laptop Icon showing.

Does anybody know how I can run the Network  initialization again and/or why only 1 of the  devices is showing in my network? I am not too concerner that the other 2 devices arent showing, my worry would be that i might not be aware if an unidentified device connects.

Thanks Kevin

Hi snixon2010,

Thanks for reporting the issue to us. Could you let us know your OS specifications ?

I am currently running Windows 7 Ultimate SP1.

Is that enough information?

Will this be fixed in a future update once the product team have been told of this problem?

Same here, bottom of screen is below toolbar, restoring up will allow me to see the bottom but when reopened it's the same again.

I'm running NIS 2013, Windows 7 home premium sp1, I5 processor,  6Gb ram, IE 9.

Yeaah so defiantly a issue with the product.

After digging around, I kind of see where they are showing basiCally same info.  I do have an unknown device showing on the Security Map for the Win7 computer (ethernet connection thru a wireless router to network).  Decice is shown as NAME "NEW"

Categort "ROUTER/SWITCH" Restricted.  Under edit function shows mfd'd by Cisco/Linksys of which I have none..  I cannot find a listing for it;s displayed MAC addres (C1-C0-C1-86-3C-82) on my computer (ipconfig/all).  Could this be some other adapter broadcasing near me?.  if so, would I be able to see the MAC address?

Heres anotegr thought.  Awhen reading a support page, I found that  when a device in the Network Security Map displays the name of the device as NEW if it meets the following conditions:The device does not have a NetBIOS nameor The device has a firewall that is enabled.  Under support for NetBIOS, printing and sharing is discudsed.  Could This device be my printer?which is connected to Win7 via USB cable, and shared over my network.
