Never ending Norton Liveupdate

I just installed Antivirus and started "Liveupdate".  Each item shows it is "completed" (through Process updates). but the message above the animated bar has said "Finishing processing" for the last 50 minutes.  is there no end?  Can I cut it off without serious consequences?
