I installed a new hard SATA drive, and used Norton Ghost (from SystemWorks 2003) to clone the old drive to the new. The new drive has been initialized with the drive letter F. (This is the third drive in the machine, and I'm running WinXP Pro, SP3.) I can access the new drive after a normal startup, booting from the old drive. However, when the old drive is unplugged and startup is attempted, the following messages appear in the "Windows 98 Startup Menu":
Windows has detected a registry/configuration error.
Choose Command Prompt Only, and run SCANREG
Missing or corrupted files: C:\windows\himem.sys
Missing or corrupted files: C:\windows\dblbuff.sys
Missing or corrupted files: C:\windows\ifshlp.sys
C:\>set path=c:\windows;c:\windows\command;c:\progra~1\atitec~1\aticon~1
c:>
Cannot find win.com, unable to continue loading windows
When I entered SCANREG at the C prompt, it said Bad command or file name
The new drive is a Seagate SATA Barracuda, 250gb.
The original drive (source) is a Western Digital Caviar SE 200gb EIDE.
Thinking that Ghost may have miscopied the files, I formatted the new drive and ran Ghost again, with the same result.
Any help would be appreciated.
