Most of us have probably been exposed to those annoying IMbots. The ones that send us an IM two seconds after we start our client telling us about a website that we really should check out. Usually the screenames are ones that we do not recognize.
Today I was hit by something different. As soon as my IM client was online I received an IM from one of my online contacts telling me that I could get a cool free ringtone and I was provided with a link to the site. Since I don't normally get IMs of that nature from this contact I IMd her back in the same thread and asked her if she had sent the original IM. She assured me that she had not. I suggested that she scan her PC and at the time of this post I have not yet heard back from her.
I don't know if the culprit in this case is a virus or some new IMbot that is capable of impersonating one of my online contacts. Has anyone encountered a similar situation? Any ideas?
Tell her to Scan in Safe Mode and I would also suggest Scanning your computer to make sure you are not Infected.
