Hi I've been using NIS 2008 on my computer - registered on an norton account. My subscription is expiring soon and so, I went ahead and purchased a new NIS 2008 bundle (since renewing was much more expensive)..
How do I update my existing NIS 2008 to recognize this new product key? Can I set up a new norton account and change the norton account on my existing installation to point to the new norton account? If so, how can I do that?
Thanks!

I do this for the same reason <g>
All I do is follow the normal installation procedure using the new NIS disk. It will say it has found an existing installation do you want to install it so answer YES. (It doesn't remove everything but leaves certain information that the next installation can pick up).
From memory, you will get to a point about registering your new copy and it will either go to your existing Norton Account or you tell it to go there (I can't be certain from memory) and if it has not already asked you to enter the new KEY it will then ask for it and you do it.
It will add the new version to the Norton Account and show the old one, maybe as Expired if it has actually run out.
A number of us have asked Norton to modify the Norton Account so that either we can add information identifying which installation is on which computer or for it to pick this up during installation.
Sorry to be slightly vague but the simple answer is just start the installation and all will be revealed <g>

Open Norton Protection Center and on the left side you'll see a link to Subscription. Click this link and you'll see that all you need do is enter the newly purchased activation key. I believe they'll even roll over your present subscription and grant you the extra days....
Thank you for your responses! :)
Stu, I tried the link you provided, but that didn't seem to address the problem that I am facing.
huwyngr, Donahu1 - This will work! Thank you :)
Just out of curiosity, is there a way to change the norton account associated with this installation? (without uninstalling the existing NIS and wiping out all custom settings?)
Thanks again! I appreciate your help

I don't know but I doubt it since there does not seem to be any user access to what is in the individual's Norton Account. But hang on and see if any of the Norton Staff can comment on this.
If you are trying to associate the installation of NIS with another existing account, you'd probably want to contact our Customer Support team.
If you are trying to change the email address or information for the existing Norton Account, you can login to mynortonaccount.com and edit your profile settings.

I have the same situation as jj14: My NIS2008 expired and I found NIS2008 on sale at BestBuy recently so I purchased a whole new package.
I tried your suggestion of going to the subscription page. I selected "I have already purchased a subscription ...." option and then started to enter the product key. It seems that the renewal key that one would download during an online subscription renewal must only be 4 characters long, whereas the product key from a new purchase is 5 characters. Therefore I can't seem to enter the key to make it work.
I tried un-installing and reinstalling off of the new CD (same version) and I ended up with no way to enter the new product key. It still rememberd the the old expired key so I was right back where I started. I suspect that the key is buried in the Registry somewhere and is not removed when you uninstall.
Did I do something wrong? Is there a way of entereing the new key or removing the old one from the Registy (without messing up the computer)?
I would expect that purchasing a full package would constitute a renewal.
I have a Vista laptop and XP Home computer to update.
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Regards,
I did some more reading and found another post listed today that had the answer.
http://community.norton.com/norton/board/message?board.id=nis_feedback&thread.id=4859. So please disregard my previous message.
On a related note I am pleased to see these forums running and providing a lot of great information. Keep up the great work.
cheers,
Hope you have installed the NIS 2008 product.
Open your Norton product,on the right top corner of the interface, you can see Help and Support.
Click on Help and Support, and click on the Activation option on the top of the new window.
Click NEXT on the new window and then enter your 25 alpha numeric product key.
Proceed with the installation and let me know if this has worked.
Maybe this can help?
