I’ve posted here a couple of times regarding problems with the trial version of NIS2009. I thought I would take a minute to post a “Thanks” to all the folks that answered my questions- Symantec employees as well as posters. Most of the time, forums have people having problems. That’s good- mostly why they are there. But I think it’s important to post some good experiences too; maybe for “lurkers” thinking about a purchase. Having been one of those, I just recently bought the subscription to NIS2009. I tried almost ALL of the big name suites. Not going to mention them to trash them; they are good, just didn’t work on my system as well as Norton. Coupled with the NEW customer support (A++), forum help (impressive that employees monitor this- and uncommon), and a tremendous product, I am quite happy with the purchase. Another determing factor was what I understand was a purchase by Symantec of the parent company of Threatfire- I think we’ll be seeing some integration in updates. Even without that though, this company has had a complete turnaround. Keep up the good work.
Hi deuceswild,
That was thoughtful of you to take the time to post your positive comments. As you mentioned, perhaps your remarks will convince some "visitors" to give Norton a try.
I'm glad that you are pleased with NIS 2009 as it is certainly a great product.
And I'm also glad that you have joined the Norton Community Forums. Be sure to stop by here often!
Best Wishes.

I couldn't have said it better. Thanx for the kind words
You are certainly correct. Symantec has shown huge improvement compared to their competitors and it has also out done itself by giving customers a new and improved NIS 2009.
I love the product and specially all the NORTON EXPERTS who are so patience and understanding with users problems.
Love you all and love NIS2009.
Thank you
Hello RobinDawn and welcome!
You didn't mention which Norton Product and version you are running. I assume the trial version is Norton Internet Security but perhaps you could clarify that and provide the version number (Main Norton interface > Support > About).
The latest Norton products are designed to run unobtrusively in the background providing you with constant security while not interrupting your work. By default, the Idle Full System scan runs every seven days and only when your computer is idle. Idle Quick Scans may run a few times during the day checking the most vulnerable areas of your computer, but these scans generally last less than a minute.
The only reason you might want to run Norton in Safe Mode is if you suspected malware intrusion.
The Free version of Malwarebytes when used as an on-demand scanner is fine. The Paid version of Malwarebytes runs realtime in the background and can cause conflicts since Norton is always running in the background.
Last but not least, you didn't mention how you uninstalled AVG free, but to be certain there are no leftover remnants of that program, you might want to run the AVG removal tool from this link.
I hope I was able to answer your questions. If not, don't be shy!
Hi Phil_D, thanks for the welcome :) It's Norton Internet Security 2011 version 18.5.0.125. My Malwarebytes is the free version. I was used to scanning with AVG free in safe mode every day. So I don't need to do that with Norton? I'm planning on buying it before my subscription runs out, if I like it. I already like the features that I've seen so far.
I uninstalled AVG through the Control Panel. I'll look at the link you provided. Thank you!
Thanks for the additional information. With Norton Internet Security 2011 v 18.5.0.125, you have the latest and greatest version of computer security. The Free Version of Malwarebytes will run well as an on-demand scanner.
In answer to your question, no, you do not have to manually scan your computer each day. Between the advanced Norton detection engines and the daily Idle Quick Scans, day to day manual scanning is a thing of the past. Just let Norton go to work in the background and you can virtually forget about it.
I would advise that since you just installed NIS 2011, an initial Full System Scan should be run (in Normal Mode). This can be done from the main interface "Scan Now" > "Full System Scan". After this intial scan, let the automated features and scans do the work for you.
Stop by anytime if you have any questions or would like to explore the many other features of NIS 2011.
I did run the full initial scan. It took at least an hour and found 40 tracking cookies. I really appreciate the information and I'm very relieved that I don't have to spend and hour and a half scanning every day any more. It takes a load off my mind. Thank you very much for your help. :)
Oh, I also had NoScript as an add-on in Firefox but I disabled that since i figured I didn't need it any more and it's annoying. VERY ANNOYING.
Hi RobinDawn,
NoScript is still a valuable security tool. JavaScript figures prominently in malicious online threats these days, and limiting this avenue of attack can protect you from malware that may be too new for Norton to recognize. As long as you permanently whitelist sites that you visit regularly, it shouldn't be too annoying to grant temporary permissions to other sites when it is necessary. Admittedly, browsing is easier if sites are just allowed to do whatever they want, but JavaScript lurking in a malicious banner advertisement can ruin your whole day. NoScript is the best way to allow a site to use scripting, while still blocking the third-party ad sites on the page. Despite the occasional inconvenience I would urge you to stay with NoScript as a first line of defense against attacks launched through your browser.
Hi SendofJive, Okay, on your recommendation I have enabled NoScript again. I do want to be as safe as possible. Thanks for your help!
You do not need Support to make your purchase. Just follow my suggestions above to purchase directly from Norton, or from a reputable retailer.
Hello,
The two new Acers (Win-10) have Norton 'trial'. The other three have Windows 2007 with MS Security Essentials for two, and Malaware Bytes for the other. I know MS Sec-Ess is not supported anymore, hence, Norton for all three.
Thanks!
Nando
How are you protecting your current 3 computers?
When the trial versions expire, you can enter a product key you purchase. So to get your Deluxe version, you can just purchase online, either directly from Norton, or from a reputable retailer. The retailer option will usually be less expensive.
As for waiting 30 minutes. You have noticed the messages on all support pages about the extended wait times for support due to reduced staffing during the Covid pandemic?????
