I just installed and configured Online Family and nothing is working - blocking or monitoring. The web stuff is all configured and the user is shown to be monitored by the computer under the user's profile. The Norton online service appears to be running. And I have uninstalled and installed Safety Minder again already. Still nothing. I have added www.youtube.com to the blocked sites and I can still go there without any problem. Any suggestions?
Just noticed that I am getting emails that say:
Norton Safety Minder on Office Computer used by Isaac has been disabled. Therefore, Norton™ Online Family cannot monitor the Internet activities of your children. Go to your child's computer and restart Norton Safety Minder.
Any ideas as to how this is getting disabled? I certainly am not doing it.
Hi csheets,
Please make sure you log onto the PC using the kid's Windows account, which is being monitored.
Also, give the kid’s user account non-administrator rights(restricted or limited) and keep the password of your Norton Online Family away from the child. Otherwise, a monitored child is able to tamper the system.
Please check out on the link below to the “Getting Start” Help file to see if it answers your questions. If you have any questions, please let us know.

Yes - I have done all of this and still nothing is working.
I have the EXACT same issue, so you aren't alone. Online Family was working fine for about 5-6 months, but a while back it began sending me emails saying it had been disabled on my son's user name, exactly the same email message you have been receiving. I went in and turned off that feature so it would stop cluttering my email.
My son's monitoring stopped working at the same time.
I have un-installed and re-installed OF, but nothing changed, still doesn't work.
Funny thing is, I'm within 12 days of my license expiring, and Norton wants me to pay 50 bucks for another year's use of a product that isn't working. Nice.
fwiw, I am running Windows 7 Home Premium
update: ok, maybe I am stupid, but when I just signed in to Online Family, the first page that appears is "Alerts". Its got an email listed for every day with the " Norton Safety Minder is not running. This could be caused by a problem with the program, or else a user might have shut down a Norton Safety Minder component. Please restart the computer." message. Then click on the "Settings" tab, then pick my son's user name, then click on "Profile". In the upper right corner, there is a green check mark that indicates "Norton Safety Minder" is ON.
On the left side of the screen is a list of computers running NSM. In my case its just one computer. Right below the computer icon is a red line of text stating "********* is no protected!" duh, not sure how that got turned off. I clicked his user name in the list under this line of text, and it turns his name green and says he is protected. Then click "update settings" lower right corner.
If NOF wasn't working becasue of this simple thing, then I am dumb. Will update once I know if this fixes the issue.
You may want to check if this is the case on your system
update:
Didn't work. It says his account is protected, but his activity monitor shows activity AFTER his allowed "time of day" has passed. This message appears under "Alerts" :
10/4/10 6:36 AM : Norton Safety Minder is not running. This could be caused by a problem with the program, or else a user might have shut down a Norton Safety Minder component. Please restart the computer
This message appears under "Activity":
Norton Safety Minder is not running. This could be caused by a problem with the program, or else a user might have shut down a Norton Safety Minder component. Please restart the computer."
The time of this alert is 9:16pm, his time is set to expire at 9:00pm. He, and I believe him, is pretty adamant that he has done nothing to cause this to happen. He doesn't know the password.
Another strange thing with his account: When you look at other user profiles, "Adam" (not his real name" shows up with a cross strike through the name "Adam", followed by "(assigned to Adam)", then followed by a check box with a red line through it next to his user account name. None of the other accounts exhibit this behavior. What gives? Help!
csheets and MadDad,
I would be glad to setup a remote access session with each of you. Please send me a private message if you're interested in it.
Thanks,
Katie
Appreciate it, but I went ahead and paid for NetNanny. Thanks anyway.
