New version of NIS is thrashes my HDD to the point that my WIn 7 Pro PC doesnt respond

Since the July update to NIS, I seem to have a re-occurring problem on just my Win7 Pro laptop which is that the HDD gets thrashed to the point that the computer becomes unresponsive.   My 2 other PCs running Win7 Std updated without a problem.

This is what happens each time I try to re-install NIS

1) I download and install the latest version of NIS using my norton's account.

2)  I get a message saying my three keys are in use, so I remove the key against this specific laptop.

3) the software activates and appears normal but the HDD is being thrashed

4) after a long while I get an windows error message along the lines of 'This program has stopped responding, do I want to continue or cancel?'   Either option doesn't do much

5) after this the PC freezes or is so slow and unresponsive that it is not usable.  Nothing happens when I try to do a CTRL-ALT-DEL or shut it down even after a good 10-20 wait.

6) All I can do is a hard shut down by holding the power button in for 10 secs, and then reboot the PC. However, the reboot process takes over 20 minutes just to load the windows system and desktop (because of the HDD thrashing), and my nortons usually has a red cross through it.  When I manage to re-open it it will have the message that my subscription has expired.  (I am paid up until 30 Dec 2015)

I have re-started in "Safe mode" and done a full-system scan which identified one threat that was quarantined.  However, as soon as I start in normal mode, the HDD thrashes and the slowness reappears.  I have no choice but to remove NIS with the Nortons removal Tool so I can use my laptop (unprotected)!
