sidmac,
Physically disconnect from the internet (pull the plug) and restart your computer in SAFE MODE.
Then run a full Norton scan. Let us know the results.
Ok thanks for the suggestion. Did as you said and it seems ok - antivirus found 1 tracking cookie (not unusual but said it found 2 other issues and resolved them, but did not say what they were.
Typing in browsers still seems a bit slow - some key strokes are missed on the display. Also get a spelling checker popping up when entering this message - is this part of this application?
Just got a firefox window spontaneously open to this link but nothing is displayed.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks!
[edit: link removed since issue is resolved.]
another pop up that came up in facebook, using internet explorer...
[edit: changed long link to hyperlink for thread formating.]
Nope, that's not good.
What Norton Product (NAV, NIS) are you using and what version?
not sure how to check the version. It is provided by my ISP Rogers-Yahoo Online Protection. Has Norton antivirus, spyware, firewall, etc... The console doesn't give me a version number.
Just got another popup for antivirus software to this URL - popups appear to be context sensitive to make them look legitimate.

To get Product Version: Open Norton Program > Help & Support in the top-right corner > About.
If you could provide any details as to what Internet Threat it would, that would be great, if any info. is available.
If you have a File which may be a New Virus, please click on this Web Link to Submit to symantec Security Response: http://www.symantec.com/business/security_response/submitsamples.jsp

Yes I can see all of the Thread; just wondering if you had/have any other details.
There is currently a Newer Version of N.I.S. available and you should Download and Install that as soon as possible; once installed, Update your Norton Product and run a Full System Scan in Safe Mode.
Good Afternoon Floating_Red,
A good suggestion to upgrade, but I was dealing with someone earlier that had Rogers and I don't think they are able to upgrade because the NIS is built into the "Rogers Yahoo Online Protection" suite which is provided to their customers.
When I checked the Rogers website I noted that the Online Protection they provide has more than just Norton involved and somewhere on the site it mentioned that the protection package does not even support Vista. I think that speaks volumes.
sidmac,
Let's try an "end run" around this thing. Download, install and update the FREE version of Malwarebytes. Then run a Malwarebytes scan in normal mode and in safe mode.
The FREE version is an on-demand scanner and will only run when you tell it to. It does not run in the background, so it won't interfere with Norton.
ah, good find! I guess I’ll have to follow up with Rogers now to upgrade to the newer version?
Yes, following up with Rogers would be the best bet. I don't think the upgrade version on the Norton website would integrate with the Rogers Online Protection suite.
In the mean time, try the Malwarebytes download I suggested.
thanks guys, so far so good. sorry for long delay in responding, was a busy week. the vundo(?) virus was found by malware. Though I just got the spelling checker pop up when i went to type this reply. otherwise, no other pop ups yet. will see how the next few days go. already noticing a difference with typing speed though, so good sign!
sidmac,
Glad to hear you are having good results!
