NG 15 telling me external hard drive is read-only

Hi All

I have a problem; just don't know how serious.

I have a brand new Dell Optiplex 380 computer only a couple of weeks old. Win 7 SP1 32bit with 2 internal hard drives: 'c' for OS and programs, 'd' for data

I was using NG15 on my old XP (only 1 internal drive on that machine), backing up to an external hard drive (letter assigned was 'k').

Today I decided I'd better do a Full System backup on my new computer. NG15 is installed (no problems installing it). I plugged my External drive into the USB port. Norton sees that drive but calls it 'F'.

I went through all the steps to setup a new backup but when it came to the Backup Destination therein lies the problem: NG15 has said that this drive ('F') is Read-Only and not a valid destination.

There are old backups from the XP machine still on this external drive. I was keeping them because I have not restored all my documents (word, excel, etc) from the old machine. I have restored (is this the proper term?) from a USB flash drive documents that are important (I dragged & dropped those documents to a USB flash drive because I'm paranoid about losing real important stuff). I was planning on restoring, from the back ups on the external Hard Drive, when I have more time and the need for those documents.

OK, so what do I do now?? Hope I can 'restore' the rest of my documents from the external drive to 'D' of the new machine and do that? Reformat the external drive (it is NTFS already) so that it can be used 'fresh'? Or, go out and buy another external hard drive for backup purposes?

Hopefully, there is somewhere in NG that I can configure (easily since I'm not computer savvy) so it recognizes that it can backup on the existing hard drive.

Thanks in advance for your time and help. All comments will be greatly appreciated! I think I've attached screen prints of what NG has been telling me

With the external drive plugged into the windows 7 system, open the drive in windows explorer and try creating some kind of file where you want the Ghost backup to be.

It can be a text file or anything.

Are you able to do so or do you get a windows error about not having permission?

Hello

Thanks for the ideas / suggestions.

First checked the USB port on computer - everything OK

Checked properties of External Drive: Files and Folders said 'Read Only'

Then tried restoring from External Drive to the computer - Successfull sort of; I couldn't get the document to restore to the 'D' drive, Norton insisted on putting it in: 'C'/Users/Barbie    Maybe because it was originally from a 'C' drive?    But I can work around that problem when needed

Then I tried copying a test document to the External Drive - Successfull

So I tried doing a Full System Backup ('C' and 'D' drives) - NG told me that it needed the 'Recovery' drive also: guess this is a Dell thing, so I said OK and proceeded to be able to do the Full System Backup.

I have no idea why NG would tell me that the External Drive was 'read only' when I tried doing a backup last Sunday.....the only difference between then and now is that I actually accessed the External Drive. Maybe that's the secret.

Anyhow, I now have a full backup. Come next Sunday I have an incremental backup to do.....my fingers are crossed.

Thanks for your time and help; it's all much appreciated!
