I can run a quick scan with no issues, but whenever I run a complete system scan Norton's crashes before its done and I lose the icon in my taskbar and I can't restart Norton's.
I do not want to re-install Windows as that seemed to help the first person with the problem, and I did shut off the compressed files like mentioned in the thread above and the scan then worked ok. But what if the virus is in the compressed files?
The reason I ran the complete scan in the first place was because I had suddenly started to get pop ups of those fake ads that tell you "you might be infected, download this program..blah, blah" and also pop ups of news ads.
I am also getting ads all over my facebook account slowing it down quite a bit when logged on. Facebook runs fine with no ads when I use a different computer. I was hoping Norton's would help me with the pop ups and Facebook ads.
Thanks for any help.
If needed you can merge this thread with the other ones.

Hello usagent,
If you have malware on your PC that is causing those popups the malware could be interfering with the Norton scans.
The OP in this thread had a similar popup problem and was able to get rid of it with MBAM: SecurityIssue
I have been using Malewarebytes, but I haven't been updating the definitions, once I did that it solved the Facebook issue with all the ads all over it, but I still had pop ups since yesterday. When I say pop ups, I mean a web pages opens up.
One was "cyberjacques" one was "antivirusessoftware" and the last had "Amazonaws" in the name which I had had quite a bit.
I tried running a complete system scan again after updating Malewarebytes and removing all the bad files, but with the same results. A non complete scan, Norton's crash, and it won't start back up unless I restart.
Norton's says that I have the latest version , but I don't know where UI about> credit is at to find my version.

Since the scan completed normally with Compressed File Scanning disabled, the problem is most likely a damaged compressed file or other problem that prevents Norton from decompressing the file to scan it. If you can determine which file is involved you could exclude it from future scans. Otherwise it is perfectly safe to leave Compressed File Scanning disabled. The contents of a compressed file cannot execute until the file is decompressed. So even if a threat is lurking within the compressed file, it cannot run. If you decompress an infected file Norton's Auto-Protect will detect any malware present at that time and will prevent it from running and causing harm.
System restore will not work due to Norton Product Tamper Protection running. You would need to disable this in the Norton settings, or run the restore in Safe Mode. HOWEVER, restoring to a previous state will cause problems with some programs, and Norton generally comes out of a System Restore operation unable to blink both eyes simultaneously. Various components within the program will no longer synch properly and you will almost certainly have to uninstall Norton using the Norton Removal Tool and reinstall it. So use System Restore only as a last resort.
Thanks for the help Jive! Its good to hear that not scanning the compressed files won't cause any issues, cuz finding the file that is hanging it up might be a challenge. I'll just run the scan with thoses files excluded. Also thanks for the info on why System Restore isn't working, which really isn't a issue since I think I used system restore once in my whole life successfully.
Thanks again!
Still getting several pop up advertisements a day, most of them end up with "page not found". I think I ma give this "combofix" a shot I keep hearing about.

ComboFix is a very advanced tool that can do incredible damage if not used correctly, and may be overkill in your case, anyway. Please only use this tool under the direction of a handler on a dedicated malware removal forum. I like the earlier suggestion to try Malwarebytes' much better (use the FREE version only - BLUE download button).
You can also run Superantispyware free version for a cross check. It is also quite good to have on board. If you want to check further use one of the free malware removal forums. They will begin with advanced logs to identify the problem and then choose the correct tool to fix it. Combofix can be very effective when its use is indicated by information in logs, but any kind of malware removal can cause unexpected damage.
