Hi Mo,thanks for responding.

YES, Downloading with FF3.5.2 +Norton toolbar & IPS. I had no problems with downloading until i installed this new patch.

Has the patch been pulled? (i.e. no longer avalible)

I had it installed etc, and it worked fine for me - yet a clean install of vista (same machine same account and so on) doesent have the patch avalible.

Yes, the patch has been pulled. Our team is working to resolve the issues posted to the forums. Thanks!

Thanks for letting us know Tony.

Keep us posted!

edit: Also, in the meantime while symantec is fixing the patch do you recommend we uninstall our norton products, run the removal tool, and then reinstall a fresh copy of them with just the 16.5 build to at least temporarily fix the problems we are having?

Tony -- I'm dealing with messages relating to problems which may be due to this update out on Compuserve. Is there a source for the last good version of NIS that can be downloaded to replace a version updated to 16.7.2.10 ?

Like:

New NIS 2009: Click on this link NIS 2009

that  people can use?

I hope I am not being an a**, but is this a [new] thread about the same issue merged into Symantec Service Framework errors with NIS 16.7.2.10 .  If I am, sorry :mantongue:

Does the "new patch" refer to this afternoon's fix?

Good idea; I'm working to get a link available to download the previous version. Thanks!

@Tony_Weiss et al;

I must close up for the day.  But before I do, I have to say thanks to Tony_Weiss and his fellow team members for working hard on this.  I know they must be inundated with requests from other lost souls such as myself.  You all must be caught in a flurry and the mayhem of ideas and complaints.  Hopefully something positive will come out of all of this.

Could you float the message up into the announcements too, especially when you have a link for downloading.

You can download the NIS 16.5 version from the Norton Update Center: http://www.norton.com/update

Thanks!

Will this link also revert NAV2009 to 16.5 version? The link brings me to three update choices, is it the free upgrade that I should use. I'm confused. IPS in firefox 3.5.1 is inoperative and the update to 16.7 was suppose fix that and now I have NAV2009 crashing and still no IPS.

Where do I go specifically to revert to the 16.5 version?

First you should uninstall NAV2009 and run the norton removal tool once or twice. Then use the link. Upon selecting which norton product you use click to download the free version (the other two are the free version plus the cost for a symantec representative to install and optimize it for you. The free version that you download will be the 16.5 build version because the 16.7 build has been pulled from the download center. The fresh copy of 16.5 will not get the flawed 16.7 patch because it has been pulled from liveupdate.

There will very likely be a new 16.7 patch within the coming weeks (based on all of the posted problems I would guestimate about a month or so).

Pexley:

Thank you. I've been trying to use system restore and the Norton files I backed up three weeks ago but was unsuccessful in getting the older version to operate. When I saw your post it had been 5 hours after I started, so I followed most of your advise . I did not use the remove utility cause I didn't want to chance loosing Ghost as well. I just did the download which did the removal and installed the fix that "about" says is version 16.7.2.10, same as the failed update. However looking at the log file, several files were removed and new ones copied. So far it is not crashing after 30 minutes, a new record. If it does fail then I will use the removal tool and try again. Now if only the IPS portion will work in FIrefox I'll be whole again.

I used intelligent update to get the new virus definitions and guess I will continue to do so until I am confident that all is safe again to use live update.

Thank you again for your reply.

I am not sure whether i am victim of the new update?

I know my norton was fine on thur nite, but now i just find out my NIS is not running. When i try to run NIS 2009 It say

"unable to open norton product, plz restart the system" and after i reboot it have same message and i now check the desktop shortcut, and it

"C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\Engine\16.7.2.10\uiStub.exe"

am i one of the victim got the update problem??

is the update cost my NIS not running??

thanks?

That’s exactly what happened to me yesterday (Friday) morning.  I have now been dealing with all the problems as everyone else as well (disappearing icon, symantec service framework errors, outlook express errors, ccsvchst gone from task manager, cannot open NIS by clicking on desktop icon).

That is very strange. You should now have a fresh copy of NAV 16.5 installed after using the link tony_weiss posted.

The link weiss posted is legit because I have used it for and I doubt symantec slipped up and kept the failed build/patch available for download. Are you sure nothing went wrong while you were using system restore? I have found that since the norton products are so complex and are updated so often they don't tend to play nicely with system restore.

Could you please provide some more details on what you did to NAV following the system restore? Did you uninstall it before you performed the restore? What do you mean by the "norton files" you backed up? Also, did you rely on the fresh copy of NAV 16.5 to remove NAV 16.7 for you?

From your messages there are one of two things that could have happened to you.

First, you performed a system restore while still having NAV 16.7 installed. While it seems like the logical thing to do (system restore does restore your computer to a previous state) you are relying on a Microsoft program to fix a symantec product for you. After the restore you had a broken NAV on your computer which you then relied on the copy of NAV 16.5 to remove. Since your current copy of NAV was broken at the time (and likely still contained fragments of the 16.7 build) NAV 16.5 could not remove it. The NAV you are currently running says 16.7 and is causing you problems. If this is what happened to you then I would recommend backing up your data in norton ghost and running the removal tool (available here) two or three times to wipe all traces of norton from your computer. From there follow my original instructions.

Though another possibility is that symantec messed up and accidentally left the 16.7 build available for manual download. If this is the case then you could just have another copy of NAV 16.7 on your computer and you would have to wait for symantec to make 16.5 available for manual download again and then follow my original instructions.

I am more inclined to think it is the first option that you are experiencing mainly because you mentioned system restore.

I have done the whole remove with the removal tool - 3 times and reinstalled from the above link so that I now have version 16.5 running. I just want to know about the live update. It says my virus definitions are 177 days old. Should I run a live update to update this or will this then instal version 16.7 again? Help!!

This may well install 16.7 - I thought it had been pulled. You could try using Intelligent Updater to update your definitions.

Pexley:

No crashes after 5 hours of operation. As stated in the previous post, I did go to the update link and it removed then installed 16.7.2.10 automatically. after 2 hours of no failures I checked and received a PM from Tony_Weiss referring me to a patch. So I also installed the patch. NO crashing at all. Additionally, the update set autoupdate on and NAV2009 did a liveupdate, all is still well after 5 more hours. Unfortunately I now don't know for sure if it was the update link or the patch that did the trick but I am satisfied all is well with the crash problem.

I suspect that the system restore didn't work cause the update added or replaced drivers in windows directory, my restore might not have done that properly as I was only copying the 16.5 folder contents to norton directory. A lesson learned. I will now do my Ghost backups more frequently to avoid this type of trouble in the future. OS, Programs and Data are on separate drives so this should not be timely.

Thanks again for your help. I hope I was able to gicve you some direction also.
