Last night, I went through the process of installing the upgrade from NIS to NIS 2007, offered as part of my subscription.
The installation process proceeded for a little over an hour and then a message appeared indicating the system needed to restart. OK, fine, I followed through with that and upon restart, there was another 15 minutes of some type of configuration and then...nothing.
There is no longer any indcation that NIS exists on my PC:
1) There is no Norton folder in "Program Files" nor any evidence of it in the "All Programs" menu
2) The "Program Files\Symantec" folder contains ONLY a "LiveUpdate" folder
3) There are no desktop icons, tray icons or any other control for access to a user interface
4) In the Control Panel, there is a control for LiveUpdate, but no other evidence of NIS.
5) If I run the "Install Norton Internet Security 2008" app again, it does something in the background for five minutes then finally presents a screen asking if I really want to uninstall the entire product.
If NIS 2008 is using stealthy technology to hide from Bad Guys, I get that. However, *I* would really like to have SOME kind of access to the software.
I suspect something went horribly, horribly wrong during the upgrade and that I'm now running with no protection whatsoever.
What do I do now?
No, I did not uninstall anything. This was supposed to be an upgrade and the instructions said nothing about uninstalling the prior version.
I find it a little galling that an upgrade to a critical security product would require the purchase of a "registry cleaner" in order to work.
WTF???
No CCleaner is a free tool that is available on the internet which works pretty well. Just remember to back up first! (CCleaner has an option to do this) It may be in the end you will have to use the Norton Removal tool to get rid of any traces of the old version left behind and then re-install the new version.
hi gwallen - i've had mixed results installing over previous versions, but it should have worked properly. i would think that at this point you are caught in a bad install, in which case you will want to use the removal and the download cleanup tools before attempting the 2008 install again. the complete instruction set is found in this document.
good luck,
mel
I would suggest using the Norton Removal Tool first and then re-install your Norton Product.
If, after using the N.R.T., you still get the same problem, try MelodicWynd suggestion.
Glad I'm reading this first - I know Norton products are rather fussy about having prior version uninstalled first......
And it's always handy to have the uninstall tool program at the ready.....just in case you get the prior version installed error message.

but is there a way to download NIS 2008 separate so I can do this upgrade offline, the software upgrade notice does not indicate a separate link to do something like this.
I'm worried about exactly the same thing the first post gwallan made happening based on what he said... and my prior years experience with Norton products.

You can download the trial version of 2008 version from the following link.
You need to activate it with your product key(Activation key) after installation
Thanks, all. Sorry if I was sounding a bit pissy. I really hated wasting my rare spare time trying to solve what seemed to be an unnecessary problem.
I went ahead and used the upgrade tool to "uninstall" Norton from my system. It didn't have to do much -- Norton was not installed and I was riding "bareback" so to speak.
I ran the upgrade tool again after a reboot and the installation process completed. My only problem now seems to be setting up a recurring, automated scan. I was able to set the day and time for the scan (Sundays at 4:00 AM), but it doesn't seem to be working. There is also no report or "results" page where i can examine the last scan. I'll keep searching.

Thank you... figured the upgrade download was so small it was probably only a download utility for the full program.

Did you uninstall v2007 first? If not that could be the problem.
Please uninstall it, than run a registry cleaner like ccleaner for example. --> than install v2008 again
