Are you using the 2008 or the 2008.5 version of Norton Internet Security? The .5 version’s firewall was significantly reworked with regard to Vista.
I believe it was the 2008.5 version as when I first started having the intial problems with Yahoo messenger I was provided a link to a download for the latest build of NIS so I removed the retail CD version I had and replaced with that. Isnt the latest build supposed to solve the issues such as these or should I have went back to the original retail copy? And how do you keep NIS from installing updates to it’s core programs whenever you like to use the auto-update feature to always stay current? Am I correct to believe that things installed such as what NIS installs into Vistas Networking setup is what is intefearing and causing these issues? Again this seems to be an issue only with Symantec’s product and not any other thirdparty as far as I can tell. I have not been able to come up with any other occurences with other competitor products such as the newly installed McAfee. I still prefer the Nortan products as they seem to have a lighter impact on the system resources such as ram usage.
The 2008.5 version can be download from NIS 2008.5. Before we do much more research into this, can you confirm that you have the 2008.5 version, and if not, try it and see if the problem goes away? Large upgrades like this don't normally come down through the automatic update channel.
Ok after much more troubleshooting I think I have finally found the culprit. It seems that all problems have vanished after going back to the retail CD version and only resurface after installing the Addonpack for NIS 2008. Im hedging my bets that the parental controls portion of Addonpack is the root of the problem even though I allowed that to install I did not have it turned on, nor did I have the privacy controls turned on as I only used the Spam guard portion of the program to help filter spam. It would make sense that this is what the issue is being as parental controls I believe would allow certain applications and ports to be blocked thus why the intial issue with the messenger programs not allowing to send or receive files from contacts. I however do not know what caused this to esculate to the point that it killed my dsl connections from the router. I however do not want to proceed and install the 2008.5 upgrade to NIS since my issue seem for the time being to be fixed. What exactly is it that the 2008.5 version does under Vista that its recommended to be installed by Symantec? Also I am for the time being do not want the Addonpack installed being as the spam filter the only thing I was really using does not seem to work fully with Vista and only stamps mail with the word Spam but does not move it to the Windows mail junk folder. Is there a way to configure Windows Mail to move the mail that NIS stamps as spam to be auto moved to its junk folder?
